I put The Descent in the PS3 and looked at the bitrates. It didn't drop below 30Mbps for a while! The audio also read 7.1 Ch. 48kHz @ 6.1Mbps. Could it really be 7.1 surround sound (box says 6.1)?!
I saw this title at the theater. This is an exact replica IMO! This title is absolutely perfect (from what I've seen so far)...a definite MUST HAVE! I wonder if this title will ever get rated on highdefdigest.com. If it is rated, over there, Peter will probably only give it 4.5 stars as usual. I don't understand how this movie sucked. If you have seen the movie Pulse which came out around the same time, people have compared both since both from independent film companies. Plus Pulse sucked major ass. Stupid story line. Aside from that The Descent was a good film in general and I view new movies at least 3 times a week so its easy to distinguish the lame from the good. Plus the women had accents which made the film sexier. Come on, if you are going to call a movie lame at least pay attention to it. Who doesnt want to see women kick ass and kill crazy creatures?
The Descent was a solid 4 out of 5 stars. |

From the comments it looks like its playable, but in mt Sony, it seems to load OK, but about the time you would expect the menus to start, it gives no picture or sound, just read 000000 on the front panel and no fast forward, chapter skip, etc works. I reset the player, same result, Other discs play without problem.
Is there anything about this disc (settings, etc) that I'm missing? CMM |

I had issues with my Sony Vaio (VGN-AR290G) notebook not playing certain Blu Ray titles; that and the fact that it did not play well w/ my Sony 40" XBR2 caused to me ship it back.
I replaced what I hoped to be my Blu Ray player w/ the Sony BDP-S1 (nice) and until last night I've not had a problem but I cannot get the "Descent" to play. Don't want to speculate too much but perhaps all the vaunted extras are too much for my poor BDP-S1? I should have my PS3 later today and I will try the disc then but I doubt this will make a difference... bummer. I was really looking forward to this disc as I enjoyed the movie in the theater. Any feedback or suggestions would be most appreciated. |

How do you know if a disc is BD-J? I didn't see any unusual markings on the disc.

Quick question: The title mentions the video codec as AVC, is this confirmed? The aforementioned fanboys have been saying that Lionsgate was moving to VC-1, which to them meant they were just about to go neutral. If that's not the case, perhaps their gloating is for naught. |

At least up until I brought up the bargin bin laptop pc used in all hd dvd players....and the fact that they freeze with any given movie at will....which is far worse than a temporary BD-J problem on a couple of discs. ![]() |

Well this disc won't play on my $1,000 BDP-S1 but it does on my $600.00 PS3... oh well it was silly to have them both.

HD-DVD fanboys should have no room to talk. I've had the Toshiba HD-DVD player since the launch day and I specifically remember Universal titles playing about 25 minutes of a movie and then locking up until a firmware release about a month later. Now the player just randomly freezes up. Also I believe during layer changes on Universal titles the audio jumps. As for The Descent not playing, this is the very first problem I've had with the Sony BDP-S1. If you go to Sony's site, they have a list of 4 movies (The Descent, League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Speed and Behind Enemy Lines) that have problems that'll be fixed when the firmware upgrade comes out. Hopefully the firmware upgrade comes soon because I was looking forward to this movie.

Does anyone know if it does play on the Panasonic? I was going to buy it this weekend but will hold off if it's not going to play.

I actually have Speed and Behind Enemy Lines and I don't have problems with either of those titles, except for the game on Speed. I haven't tried Behind Enemy Lines to see if there's a game on there or not. But Speed does have a somewhat long load time, but that doesn't bother me. I got used to long load times with HD-DVD.
