first we need to get some more intelligent life here.

i've always thought there could be, but if there is I do not believe they will be that much further along than we are, if at all.

perhaps our first encounter will be an intergalactic fender bender?

i just think the universe is too large. what a waste of space if we are the only ones here. seriously, look at this planet alone and see how many kinds of life exist here and are being discovered everyday.

Even if there is, and that's a really big "if", the billiions of years it took for us to develope into what we are could easily mean that whatever may be out there is a few billion years behind us.

I think you can safely assume in your lifetime and your kids and their kids, the ultimate answer to this one will not be solved as "NO", is never going to be an acceptable answer and "YES" is going to have to take someone knocking on our door to prove.

So, don't waste your time with those wacko's on coast to coast and remember, don't sweat the petty things and don't pet the sweaty things...

its just weird to think there could be something outside of us. and like you said, our ego's don't want to admit we could be inferior

well the common theory is that aliens would be far superior to us. I just think its very unlikely. unless their lifetimes were extremely short, thus letting then evolve rapidly.

well considering how huge the universe is. its more unlikely that there isn't something more advanced

The life of a butterfly is short, I hardly think that qualifies as being superior to humans. The life of a tree is very long and again, it hardly qualifies as superior to humans, yet it is alive.

Aliens would have to appear in common lore as superior as we can't visit them and for them to exist, they would have to visit us, thus making them superior.

just because nobody has visited doesn't mean they cant be out there and better than us.

There inlies the crux of the entire argument. If we can't visit them and they can't visit us, do they really exist? There's a world filled with folks looking for their 15 minutes that sure believe in it..

its true that butterflies and trees have very different life cycles than us and neither is our superior. but what I am talking about is if these beings are to be so far advanced compared to us they would have needed to go from single cell organism to their current stage faster than we did. since the entire universe was born from a singularity and there are certain things that all life needs, it takes those things a certain period of time to form and mature. so in order for their single celled organisms to evolve into their complex organisms then for them to become more complex and begin inventing and learning earlier they would have to evolve more rapidly. otherwise they'd be at about the same place we are. thus the intergalactic fender bender would be the first contact. am I only making sense to myself? because I have been up for a while and might not know if I sound crazy.

and never underestimate butterflies. no one EVER suspects...THE BUTTERFLY!!!!!!!!

It's certainly plausible. If I remember it all correctly the universe is speculated to be some 11.5 billion years old and Earth a mere 4 to 5 billion years old. Granted it's all shear conjecture from the best minds of our time, but a fun topic.

But who's to say they in their similar evaluation didn't succumb to a similar ice age that wiped out all known life on their planet and they had to start over as single cells again, putting us clearly in the lead once again!

how do you know we didn't develop as a civilization several times only to destroy ourselves?...

pyramids are all over the globe...even in parts of what Russia used to be...not to mention we don't know how old Mayan temples are and we truly don't know how old some of these Egyptian pyramids are as well....
