Unless I really and truly love the movie, I don't double dip.

Cool

I have and will replace the great, epic, and Good movies I have. But I don't think I want Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles the movie on Blu-ray.

I've replaced 5 so far. But need to add those were all through BOGO sales. Never bought one alone to replace a DVD. Also if the choice was better, I wouldn't have done it at all.

When I started buying Blu-ray movies I made myself a promise that I would not buy any Blu-ray releases of movies that I already owned on DVD but I have already broken this rule and now with all of the Spielberg movies coming out on Blue I'm starting to worry that I will collapse and buy everything again on Blu-ray!

What's your stance on buying Blu-rays if you already own the DVD?

Zak

I am a notorious Disney double dipper, but I am considering eBaying any of the DVD movies I buy on Blu-ray.

This is basically the same thread as the other DVD one but I said that I will not RE BUY the 1000 dvds I have, I mean I know that everything looks better in Blu and I am a HUGE supporter but for older films, I will only rebuy my "Favorites". I think when I get a little older it will be nice to pop in a dvd rather than a Blu and it will be nostalgic. Then I will tell the children to gather up as I explain how the Format War Started and how Blu ray conquered over HD Dud. But the children will ask: "what is Hd dvd?" and I will tell them "Exactly".

There's no way I'm re-purchasing 800+ dvds & boxsets. I won't be buying any new releases on DVD, but will only re-buy big-time action/adventure titles on BR when they go on sale, the ones that stand up to repeated viewing and make full use of lossless audio, etc.

I don't think my Road Trip DVD will get replaced with a Blu-ray

I could not agree more. When I purchased into HD, I bought everything at once. TV, BD player, receiver. Hooked it all up and I have to say, I was stunned beyond words. I had to replace all of my favorite movies from DVD to BD and it has been worth every single penny! It is mind blowing. Here I am 6 months into HD and the PQ still rocks me. SQ is so off the charts now, I feel like someday I should be waking up from my Blu-ray dream and back to the hum-drum world of lame DVD PQ with it's weak and pointless SQ. Please... just let me sleep. BD HD is really what home theater enthusiests have been waiting for all these years. Sure something better will come along eventually, but when you can match or out-do PQ and SQ from the theater experience, you have arrived close enough!

Every time I watch a standard DVD now, I am appalled by the terrible, soft picture quality. I will upgrade all of them to Blu-ray, no exceptions.

As for what to do with the DVDs, I get rid of them on Half.com. It's true that most used DVDs don't go for much these days, but it's better than nothing, and it all adds up.

Every movie that I own on DVD that has replay value will get replaced by blu-ray if at all possible.

I've got about 600 standard dvd's and dont really want to spend all that money again. Im new to this blu-ray format and have thought i'd just start buying my future purchases on blu-ray and keep my old dvds, unless its one of my all time fav's which i'd then re-buy.

Although, i think while some films aren't going to be blu-ray in the near future i'll still buy some regular dvd's of stuff like Transformers, Shrek 3 etc. Because you can pick them up pretty cheap in the likes of HMV a couple of months after they've been released.

Does anyone know how many post's you need before you can actually start a thread?

I suspect Blu-ray will never see the sheer volume of titles that DVD is offering right now -- as I suspect it'll never penetrate just as deeply into all segments of the market. So some of the more obscure titles I own and love will just never come to it. That's one reason I'll hold on to a part of my collection.

The other is all the stuff that was produced in SD resolution (not only the DVcam stuff, but TV programming like the Young Indiana Jones series, whatever it's called these days).

But in all other cases, Blu-ray simply offers the possibility of master quality for home video viewing. Not all titles available truly fulfil this promise, of course, but many do, and in those cases, going from DVD to Blu-ray simply feels like going from an approximation to the real thing. Watching CE3K recently, I felt as if I was seeing it anew, even though it was one of my first DVDs, and I'd already double-dipped for it on that format.

Not too many titles can stand the test of time, and in those cases, I'm more than happy to double-dip. And I'll be first in line when prestige labels like Criterion bring their expertise to Blu-ray.

Didn't people dismiss DVD when it first came out though? Saying VHS had too much support? In 18 months you'll be able to pick up a blu-ray player for £75/100 and the titles will be in the 3 for £20.

Here in the UK, you cant even buy a regular CRT tv anymore - its either LCD or Plasma. Why?, because Hi-Def is the way forward. You wouldn'y buy a mobile phone nowdays if it didn't have a colour display, camera etc. Same with tv and dvd's - eventually the stores wont stock standard dvd, like they dont stock VHS anymore. The studios will gradually stop making sd-dvd's and it'll just move on.

In my eyes, its a natural progression. VHS, DVD, Blu-Ray. Just like games consoles - as a newer better one comes along the old ones disappear.
