Question Best Buy misinformation?

After some online research and several trips to BB and CC armed with questions and manuals of my current equip, I bought a Samsung BD-P 1000 and a Sony receiver with HDMI in/out. My tv is a 50inch Panny TH50PHD6 with no HDMI or DVI input. Was told I could use the HDMI to receiver and output component to tv and get upconverted video to 1080i. Not the case... will only push 480p to tv on standard DVDs and cannot play BR dvds at all..error message says 'change the resolution', but the player will not accept the change..stays at 480. Need your help..am I missing something or just a dummy...?

it is possible the employees did not know what they were talking about. the only way for upconverted content from the sammy is over hdmi. as for BR discs, you can use component and get 1080i out of them. i would expect your receiver and t.v. would at least support that. however, for DVD's, you'll be stuck with 480p.

That's right! Almost any problem can be solved by throwing more money at it.
