For BD: in general, 2 channel PCM but will usually try and do listen to DTS HDMA and DD TrueHD as well and choose what ever I prefer at the time.

For DVD's, always 2 channel PCM if included.

None of the above if LOSSLESS HD 5.1/7.1 codecs are available.

My preferred order is as follows:

#1. Lossless PCM 5.1/7.1
#2. DTS HD MA 5.1/7.1
#3. Dolby TrueHD 5.1
#4. DTS
#5. Dolby Digital
#6. PCM Stereo

In fact, that is my order of preference for ALL Blu-ray content.

PCM Stereo is uncompressed raw data, so it can be classified as LOSSLESS.

Question for you, is Lossless PCM 5.1/7.1 considered a surround sound per say or is it actually stereo coming out of all speakers? How do you connect your BR player to the reciever to achieve Lossless PCM 5.1/7.1 ? I am currently using Elite 23fd with HDMI to a Elite SC-35 reciever. Will the display of the receiver actually say 'Lossless PCM 5.1/7.1' ? Mine says 'Direct', is that the samething as Lossless PCM 5.1/7.1?

You just connect it with your HDMI cable like you have. If you select the 5.1 or 7.1 PCM track on the BD, most likely your receiver will say PCM or Direct. It is 5 or 7 channel discrete sound just like DTS HDMA or DD TrueHD, just uncompressed.

I would guess Lossless is not the correct term when saying PCM as it is uncompressed so you do not need to classify it as lossless.

It is MOST DEFINITELY a surround sound track. If listed as 5.1 or 7.1, the track has all of those channels individually mixed into the presentation. PCM stereo has ONLY 2 CHANNELS MIXED INTO IT. So, PCM Stereo has FL (front left) + FR (front right). PCM 5.1 has FL + FR + RL (rear left) + RC (rear centre) + RR (rear right) + SUBWOOFER. PCM 7.1 adds 2 more channels onto those.

Sounds like you have the right setup to handle the codec properly. HDMI carries the full 5.1/7.1 channels from the player to receiver. But, if the disc doesn't specifically list PCM 5.1 and lists only PCM Stereo as audio option, you won't be getting a surround track anyhow.

I'm not familiar with the Pioneer Elite models though, so I'm not certain what "Direct" means as far as how the sound is being handled by the receiver.

I prefer the format that the content was designed for. Jerry rigged multiple channel doesntappeal to me, but if it's implemented smartly, I'll take it ove plain stereo.

Sounds like you're describing one of the Stream Direct modes (Pure Direct, Direct, Auto Surround, etc.). If the SC-35 is like the older Pio Elite receivers, it should only momentarily display "Direct" then revert to the native encoding such as PCM, DTS-HD MSTR, etc. Check your manual for more details on Stream Direct modes.

To the OP, I prefer the highest resolution format available in a particular BD.

Lossless at all times, preferrably multi-channel.
I don't care which codec is used where dts-ma and TrueHD are concerned.
With DVD if it doesn't have a PCM stereo track, it's rarely watched.

I will not argue with anybody who prefers PCM (it's as lossless and uncompressed as you can get). But I'm one of those regular joes who prefers "DTSHD MA" or "TRUEHD" lighting up on their receivers instead of "MULTI". It's crazy, but it's true.

LOL me too. I listen to all mine in the highest quality 5.1 mix available on the disc. My dream scenerio would have ALL Blu-Ray concert discs in 96/24. I currently have 2 (John Mayer & Dave Matthews & Tim Reyolds) and they are two of the best sounding ones IMO. I just ordered the new Leonard Cohen Songs From The Road BD that is also supposed to be TrueHD 96/24. I sure hope the sound doesn't disappoint!

Whatever sounds best Sometimes that is a dolby track, sometimes it's PCM and sometimes DTS.But I almost always find the PCM to be the best option if available due to my two speaker setup.

+1

I like the fact that a separate stereo mix seem to be standard on music releases.
Luckily the music labels understand that wanting hi-res/lossless audio isn't always the same as wanting 5.1 sound.

I wish I could say the same about the movie industry.
