Default Akira on Blu-ray?

Anyone know when it will be available? It was supposed to be released last summer.

It was delayed indefinitely. If I recall correctly, the reason had to do with "quality issues".

No, it hasn't come out here in Japan, and I haven't seen any updates since the delay...

It was delayed with no new date or officially stated reason. I've personally speculated earlier that it might be because of quality issues, if they were originally going to be using Pioneer's old 1080i master for it, but it could just as well be something entirely different. If it really was quality issues I figure it would have gotten a resolicitation by now, but instead it's been dead quiet. We do know it's coming - we just don't know when.

It is considered to be the most popular Anime title, so I'm sure they are just ensuring that they do a bang-up job on the transfer.

Some great anime in the works: Akira, Utawareru Mono, Yukikaze, Appleseed 2, and Perfect Blue (Blu?). Keep them coming. There are a lot of anime-starved blu supporters out here! Keep the prices down to Paprika levels and they'll sell. No more Royal Space Forces and Jin-Rohs. I already have the DVD. Why would I want to purchase it again just to get the Blu-ray disc?

I have the VHS and the DVD of Akira but for the fun of it I watched it again on HD PPV and it looked fantastic. Worth owning (for me anyway) in another format.

I can't wait to get more of these great titles myself. I don't have any animation on BD yet... I WANT them but I have to wait till after Christmas to buy them if I don't get them then.
I know that this will be a Blu Christmas for me .
I hope Akira is re-mastered and remixed with 5.1+ PCM... it would look AWESOME! So when does GitS make it to the states! I can't afford the $90 Japanese BD edition.

I have to wonder if they are planning on a complete new remaster from the cells themselves? I know they have a 1080i conversion out there so they could have put out a low cost version now and then had a $50 version super-deluxe later.

Knowing our luck the U.S. distributor will have problems and we won't see many of these titles for less than $80 due to our falling dollar. Typical 5 or 6 pack anime season collections on DVD are still over $40 for no frills and $70-$120 if you add commentaries or clean up the video.

No such luck, I'm afraid. It's Bandai Visual Japan releasing it, and they originally solicited for the same price as those other titles you mentioned. With Geneon out of the game in the US, we may have to a wait a while before it sees a US release, unless they decide to sell off their license.

The cels are gone, some trashed, some sold to collectors etc. What they'll use is the original film negatives.

It was originally solicited with DD5.1 and the only lossless track being the original 2.0 LPCM (dolby pro logic mix). Hopefully the delay leads to a change in specs for it.

I would love to see Akira on Blu.

Any word on other classics coming to blu - like Battle Angel Alita, GotS, GotS 2?

Here's a list:

http://www.animeonblu-ray.com/forum/...php?tid/18821/

Forget Alita by the way - Yukito Kishiro is blocking any release of the anime in Japan. James Cameron bought the US rights to it, and as a result of the rights negotiations ADV Films' DVD release got stopped as well. It will probably never be released on a home video format again, except maybe by Cameron.

Ack! Are you kidding?!?! I wondered why I've never seen a copy on DVD. Man, I hate to hear that. I loved it.

I knew Cameron had the live action rights, I hope it won't stink.

COmpletely impossible. What cells aren't....acquired for collectors are thrown in the garbage.

Akira has both a 35mm and 70mm negative for it (shot twice with different framings and backgrounds). I'd love to see them go to the 70 negative for it.

I asked. Geneon had only DVD rights, not HD rights. It's clear.

Fox will certainly release it on his behalf when the movie comes out

Really? Geneon have been selling HD VOD versions of Akira on xbox live. I know that's download, not optical, but still..
