According to this very website it is not region free but it is Region B *and* A locked (not tested for region C).

Just tested my copy on Region C and it worked fine. Region free then.

I know this is pretty out of the blue (pardon the pun), but when a movie is referred to as region free does that mean just the film isn't locked to another region? Or does it mean that the special features are also region free, because most of WotW's special features are in SD and I know sometimes SD content is PAL and won't play on region A players.

Any help with this would be MUCH appreciated.

If the disc is region free, then the disc can be played in any region. PAL and 50hz is another thing though. "War of the Worlds", doesn't have any PAL or 50hz content.

As manicsounds said the two things don't always go hand-in-hand. Luckily if they region B from a UK distributor title gets reviewed here, there's usually a note about 50hz material (Pro-B is very helpful). But I'm with you it's a bit unfair to put ABC on the back of a cover and put 50hz material on the disc, as it definitely can't be played back by all region A players.

It's rare but you do get the odd disc in a set that has bonus features disc locked when the movie disc is region free. I can't remember what title it is (I think I have it in my collection).

Been a Paramount disc I would hope that the WotW SD content is universal.

Off hand, I know that Once (UK) plays in my region A player, but the special features don't.

I just got my hands on several UK steels (Hanna, Serenity, The Adjustment Bureau, Man on Fire and Black Swan...War of the Worlds and Firely are planned next) and I don't think any of them had reviews other than the US discs. I know I have Universal discs from the UK and those always seem to play region free and have SD special features work fine, but anything else is an unknown for me and the info is not so easy to get.

I've checked out a bunch of un-boxing vids to see, but, like most reviews and comments, they usually mention region free, but that's usually just the movie and HD content and isn't a 100% guarantee of the SD content.

If its a title put out by a big studio across multiple countries then you can pretty much guarantee all SD content will be 480p/60hz

Its only really independent titles or local releases (ie BBC here in the UK) that tend to include PAL SD content.

As you and Indiana Jones posted you're pretty safe with big studio releases. Other releases from the UK check the reviews on our site. For example Betty Blue has at the end of the Video assessment Pro-B has has written:

(Note: This is a Region-Free Blu-ray release. Therefore, you will be able to play it on your PS3 or SA regardless of your geographical location. For the record, there is no problematic 1080/50i or PAL content preceding the disc's main menu)

Failing that PM a regular and ask them to check the title when they have a spare moment.
