Default Goosebumps (August 7th, 2015)

Columbia Hires Writer to Adapt R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps

Quote:
If you were raised during the 1990′s the name R.L. Stine brings back many memories — terrifying memories. He’s the author behind the contemporary horror book series Goosebumps, that features terrifying stories centering on children, monsters, ghosts, and goblins. According to THR, Columbia has plans to bring one (or more) of his stories to the big screen in a feature adaptation of the series.

The trade confirms that Disturbia screenwriter Carl Ellsworth will pen the script for Goosebumps with Neal Moritz and Deborah Forte of Scholastic Entertainment producing. Are we the only ones who feel old? When was the last time you heard the name Scholastic Entertainment? It’s been a while. Columbia picked up film rights to the series in May 2008 and is looking at a family-driven potential franchise.

Over the years, Goosebumps has sold over 300 million copies worldwide and has spawned plenty of spin-off series, video games, and even a TV show. A lot of young actors got their start on the Goosebumps series including Hayden Christensen, Laura Vandervoort, Shawn Roberts, Kyle Labine, and we’re pretty sure Adam West was on an episode or two just for the hell of it.

Our favorite books from the series were “The Haunted Mask” and “Stay Out of The Basement.” If you haven’t been exposed to any of Stine’s works, they’re amazing. They were children’s books but terrifying and a lot better than the material being thrown at kids today.
I can't wait to see this movie after waiting a year and getting no new news
they finally hired writers for the big screen adaption of Goosebumps. Can't wait for the movie as I am still a fan of the book series and still watch the TV show every Halloween. I just wonder if it's an anthology or a one story movie.

We don't know if it is a new story or will be one of the Goosebump stories. If it is a hit this could be done every two years maybe with a new director attached to each.

A year? This project's been around since the early 90's, back when the books were still on shelves on the show was still on TV. Looks like they thought "Pop nostalgia" could rescue the old memos out of the trash can.
(The last time they tried it, it never got finished, and the footage was recycled for a videogame.)

And then there was the time GB tried marketing itself as a Disney World attraction...Not a happy time for the franchise.

Never knew that I just read they bought the movie right's in 2008 and last time I heard any news was in 2009. But anyways I really hope it ends up being good as it looks like they are committed to making it.

Last year R.L Stine said it was to be a new story not based on one of the existing Goosebumps books but that could have changed by now or by the time they start writing.

If these books were still relevant and popular, then this movie could work. Which would have been 10+ years ago.

They released a new Goosebumps series called Goosebumps Horrorland that has been selling very good and going strong. Even the old books are selling good and being read by today's children so I think it's still relevant. Just not maybe as big as it was 10+ years ago but still pretty popular among today's children.

Like I said, they should have done a movie while there was still a lot of hype around the series. Back in the day, everyone read Goosebumps. There was the television show, all of the books, that would have been the best time. Not after the books are past their prime. They might be selling well now, but they will never be as big again as they were in the mid 90's.

No they should have done it back then when it was very big with everyone. But I think it can still do good as there isn't much childrens horror put out in theaters to compete with and just by trailers it will get childrens attention. But doing it when it was huge would have made it a blockbuster I bet.

I have all the books in a container. My fiancée told me to keep them when I was getting rid of stuff. Told me to keep them for when we have kids.

The first 30 were the good ones (I work with children's books), and had a good "campfire story" quality to them--Even Stine admitted #15, "The Ghost Next Door", was one of his best.

The next hundred after that were....pretty bad. Like RL was publishing those party stories where people write the next sentence after only having read the last one.

Ah, knew I had that YouTube clip around here somewhere:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KD385Q2hGhg

(This was around the time that GB was trying to beef up its marketing with identifiable "characters", which they couldn't really do as an anthology series, and so Cuddles the Hamster never quite became a household name...Similarly, Slappy the Ventriloquist Dummy, and his marketable catchphrase, "You will all be my slaves(TM)" never did quite carve their niche into American pop culture.
Check out the second half of the clips when they try selling the characters, and the parents' look of
"WTF-in' F??" is priceless. )

'Jack the Giant Killer' Writer to Pen 'Goosebumps' Adaptation for Columbia (Exclusive)
Darren Lemke is closing a deal to write the big-screen adaptation of the children’s horror series.

Darren Lemke is getting Goosebumps, closing a deal to write Columbia Pictures’ big-screen adaptation of children’s horror series.

Neal Moritz and his Sony-based Original Films shingle are producing, as is Scholastic Entertainment's Deborah Forte.

Columbia picked up the rights to the more than 50 books written by R.L. Stine in May 2008. The project has seen several writers on it, as the studio tries to crack the code for the story. Columbia is starting from page one with Lemke.

The Goosebumps series is known for paying homage to classic sci-fi/horror movies such as Night of the Living Dead and Invasion of the Body Snatchers, as well as the twist endings of The Twilight Zone. Being kids books, they are also free of the usual horror tropes of blood and sex (but are spiced with laughs).

The property, with it’s all-ages supernatural trappings, seems to fall into Lempke’s wheelhouse. The scribe, repped by UTA and Loeb and Loeb, wrote the spec script for Jack the Giant Killer, which comes out later this year from New Line as a Bryan Singer-directed fantasy. He also set up a re-imagining of The Nutcracker at New Line and worked on Shrek Forever After.

I'm not a fan of those involved, but if they do this anthology-style, I might check it out. Now, all we need is an adaptation of Are You Afraid of the Dark?

Goosebumps was a childhood staple for me. One of the things that maintained my love of horror through my younger years. To see a PG rated Creepshow would be excellent.

Thanks for the update. Was starting to think this movie had died.

I would love for Are You Afraid of the Dark? to come back as a movie. Was hoping nick would try and resurrect it but luckily they brought the TV movie back a few years ago and I was able to tape it.

I'm just happy we have The Haunting Hour on air now to take the place of those long off air shows.

I was obsessed with these books when I was a child! The Haunted Mask was definitely a favorite. I remember that one being hard to find in the store.
