Default PS3 to Onkyo TX-SR705 Question

Finally have received and installed the new Onkyo receiver. I wanted to take advantage of outputting the Higher res audio settings via an HDMI connection. Unfortunately I have an early adoption Mits tv that only has one component only high definition input. I have the receiver component out hooked to that input on the tv. I was hoping that the hdmi video feed would be outputed from this component out of the receiver but I am having no luck. The manual does not seem to diagram the possibility of HDMI video In being able to go out the component. Am I hosed??? I did set the PS3 to use HDMI out for both sound and video...I saw no picture though...I may look deeper..It may be that I have somehow have an advanced video feature enabled that my tv can not accept. If any of you have experience with similar hardware setup as I then I would welcome input. I am actually hoping I am overlooking the obvious...I would definitely feel quite the NEWB but I would be in electronic bliss

Good day and sorry for the rambling

Default I knew I rambled on to much :)

I see no opinions yet...Not surprised with my long post....Here is a nice short summation of what I am asking:

Will enabling the PS3 video over HDMI to my Onkyo receiver allow said video to be outputted to my TV via the component cables??

Take care guys and gals!!

My guess is that you have to change a setting internally on your reciever. I have the 805 and seem to remember a section where I could select the output. Maybe you can change it to "component" there. I honestly do not know if you can swith HDMI to component. Good luck, hope you figure it out!

Try looking at the manual, or online here:
http://onkyousa.com/download/own_man...m?cat=Receiver

On page 28 it says you might have to set HDMI Monitor setting to "No" to use the component or composite out instead of HDMI, but you should still be able to use your HDMI input.

Hope that helps.

Perhaps I was incorrect. The picture doesn't show HDMI "downconverting" to use component out. I don't know that it is possible now that I look at it again.

Your option might be to pick up a set of component ps3 cables. Then you can still use the sound from the ps3 via hdmi but use the video through component.

Using component video instead of HDMI would prevent you from upconverting regular DVD playback but that is all that should be negatively affected I think.

Yep Bruiser....RTFM

Page 112 of the Onkyo Manual:

No picture:

"If the video source is connected to the HDMI input, your TV must be connected to the HDMI OUT"

As you mentioned Fatty...Diagram does not show video going in via HDMI will flow out the component.

I was obviously confused on the video ins/outs of HDMI, but the troubleshooting section spelled it out clearly.

Sorry for wasting your times and thanks for your responses!

Set the 705 to monitor out as component, now set HDMI 1 to say to DVD or Game, now put your PS3 with HDMI to HDMI 1 in and then setup in the PS3 I think you will only get 1080i but you will get all the 7.1 PCM, hope thats works if not you will have to get a component lead for the PS3 and put it in component 1 and the set it to DVD or Games and do the same as before to set the PS3 to setup.

Bruiser, the set-up you are asking about works. My father uses it this way, Component to HDTV for Video and HDMI for audio. He has the PS3 and Onkyo 605.

First thing first...

You have to tell the PS3 youre outputting via Component (connect PS3 Component cable to the receiver as well as an HDMI cable from PS3 to receiver)

then go into the PS3 XMB:

Settings - Display Settings - Video Output Settings - Component / D-Terminal

Next:

Settings - Sound Settings - Audio Output Settings - HDMI

Finally on your Onkyo, configure the button you want to use...example: GAME/TV

set it up to use hdmi audio and component video. (also for hdmi video output turn to "no" as fattyslim mentioned)

Now just run a component cable from your receiver to your HDTV and you should have Component picture with HDMI audio.

(receivers do not downconvert 'digital video' signals into analog, which is why you have to run the component cable from the PS3 to receiver first instead of just using HDMI)

Onkyo 705 manual pg.27 has a video signal (conversion) flow chart.

Thanks Crack...I will try that when I get home from work. I tried that connection yesterday but I did not think I could assign both HDMI IN and Component IN to the same input (DVD in my case). Assuming this is what you are referring to....

Never mind...I see now that HDMI Digital Audio input will be selectable with your connection scheme...

Thanks again to all of you...

Default Thanks...It is working

Thanks to everyone for your input. Once I assigned both Component and HDMI to the PS3 and disabled HDMI Monitor out, all was well

The assigning two inputs to once source is what through me....The manual seemed to mention not to do this. Course HDMI conenction makes it doable...

Woohoo

Thanks again

WS-46809......I am a victim of early adopting

There are three component inputs (amongst the Composite/S-Video) and only one of these component inputs can render HD.

I must admit that I am not new to Home theater....Just the new receiver and lack of familiarity with the newer connections made me feel like a noob
