1:85.1 movie has borders on the sides - Blu-ray Forum

I've just put scooby doo live action blu-ray in and it says 1:85.1 ratio and im using the pixel by pixel setting on my tv so i should have thin black borders at the top and bottom like i do with all my movies of that ratio.With this movie im getting no borders at the top and bottom and the borders are at the left and right sides of the image instead.Can someone explain why

It's a Warner disc, and they open up their 1.85:1 releases, so, it should be filling your screen. I'm checking the screenshots in the review on this site, and they have the same thing. Warner probably opened the image up a little bit more, and didn't notice/care that people who turned the 'overscan' option off would still see the small bars. Nothing you can do about it, apart from turning the option on if those bars really bother you.

Is it true that the Blair Witch bluray is gonna have the black on the sides as well? If so that sucks. Got Em!!

I dont understand how opening it from top to bottom would squeeze it in from the sides.What with alot of Warner titles having compressed sound too,the only good thing is they're 100% region free.They even gave us Brits HD sound on terminator 3 then shafted the States with compressed.

I hope you're joking. Yes, every movie shot in 1.33:1 will have black bars on the sides.

It may not be squeezed. If they open it up from 1.85:1 to fill the screen, and open it up even more (maybe it's 1.75:1 now) then you get black bars on the sides.

Why would they do that though,it's just not necessary.

How would I know? I'm not the one who made the disc.
One explanation could be that it uses the same master as the one for dvd, and some dvds were zoomboxed, to make the owner of a regular television not miss too much image. However, when you're shooting something open matted, you can just open the image a little bit more. That way, you don't get black bars all around the image, just on the sides.

Yeah, its supposed to give it that handheld home video look... Unless I'm mistaken, handheld cameras were not recording in widescreen back then. Its actually a very good disc, if you like the movie that is. At least they did away with that crappy window boxed look that the DVD had, that thing was AWEFUL when watching it on widescreen.

An anamorphic DVD and a BluRay would each be 1.78:1 aspect ratio, so anything wider than that should use bars on the top and bottom to set the aspect ratio correctly.

Some discs, however, do not fill out the entire frame laterally and are actually underscanning it a tiny bit - something they likely do not notice if they don't have a fully visible frame. I have seen this a lot with 1.33:1 titles that are displayed on a widescreen set as you can see the full width of the frame on the display and a good portion of them are not filling 100% of the width.

Well I never seen the film period and I was thinkin about finally watching it on blu but then I seen screenshots of the side black bars and I got uninterested. Got Em!!

Awwww... come on CZAR! its not that bad... if one is an advocate for OAR for widescreen presentations, you gotta respect the directors intent with full screen movies as well...

Well I havnt seen many films from 1953 and before. I am 38 yeras old and there may have been a selct few old films like Wizard of Oz etc...but not to many. Got Em!!

No they never. In the UK Sony Pictures Home Entertainment handled the Blu-ray Release of Terminator 3. Warner werent involved with the disc.

no offense, but that sounds just as bad as the days when DVD was taking off and I'd hear consumers complaining about how horrible "the black bars" were when it came to widescreen. If you champion OAR, the same should apply with titles shot in 1:33

CZAR--I thought you were better than that. There is literally nothing to see. The film was never shot in widescreen. You are not missing anything. An easy way not to notice them is watch it with the lights out.
