Default Sony S770 vs Sony S570

I'm interested in buying a new blu-ray player that will let me stream music from my PC or a USB powered external hard drive, and also one with faster ejecting from power off without using Quick Start mode. I currently own a Sony N460 but it doesn't stream music from my PC and it takes to long to eject from power-off if I don't use the Quick Start mode.

However, I tested a my USB Passport hard drive on a friend's Sony S770 but it gave a message saying "unsupported USB device" on both USB ports. It's formatted as NTFS, is that why it wouldn't detect it?

So I the Sony S570 the same as the S770 in terms of speed of ejecting and loading, and media extender capabilities?

The usb hard drive must be formatted to FAT32 (the maximum space allowed is 4GB) so that the BDP-S570 and S770 could detect it. The hard drive is not necessary because the current Sony blu-ray players can stream music, pictures, and videos from the pc.

You're probably the first one here to complain about the eject time from the power off state on a blu-ray player. By the way no one buys a blu-ray player for the ejecting speed from the power off state in a blu-ray player. If you want fast eject times, fast boot-up times, and a very good media player, I recommend the LG BD570 or PS3.

I'm not the first to complain about taking a long time for a blu-ray player to eject. I read other users reviews on the different blu-ray players that also had slow eject and there were people complaining about it. I might be the first to complain about it on the N460 though, because I never saw someone else complain about the waiting for the eject from power-off on the N460.

I was going to get a PS3 320GB bundled with the motion controller since I read that update is going to be available to not need the Netflix disk anymore for streaming Netflix this fall, but I was told by someone that the PS3 won't upconvert Netflix streaming and only streams Netflix at the stream's native resolution.

But whats the big yank about a bd disc ejecting, you in a hurry or something. theres better things to complain about. like the useless bdj or java.

I actually agree with you. BD-Java in my opinion is worse than waiting 10-15 seconds for my tray to eject from power-off. I'd rather have BD without Java than BD with Java and less time waiting for the tray to eject.

Wow so Sony did release the S770. It looked to me for a while there that they announced the 770 at CES but then only released the 370, 470 and 570.

Errata/Sorry: Wrong links and wrong information. Those were to the Specifications not the Features list. I've removed them. In comparing the Sony Style listings, I can't readily tell the difference between the two players other than cosmetically.

The BDP-S770 is a slicker-looking unit, more solid in feel than its BDP-Sx70 models. I had both in my hands and the S770 unit did not have the cheaper controls on it like the other models that were harder to operate, the S770 has a top bar set of push buttons with more tactile feedback on the [top of the player?] for the more basic operations. The unit is more boxy, true, but it is less cheaply built in appearance, at least to me. The S770 has all the features of the S570, including 1GB of memory to load the BD faster and built-in Wi-Fi, but it adds already-loaded 3D capability without an necessary upgrade like the others do, a 3D Blu-ray movie and best yet, a lighted remote control, which only the S770 has. (bold mine)
Did the 770 arrive in the spring with 3D capability outta the box that the other Sx70 players got later in the year (summer) via firmware upgrade?

My Sony N460 does not have media extender capabilities. It won't detect my Passport USB powered hard drive and the drive makes ticking sounds once it's connected. I'm just wonder if the media extender capablities on the Sony 570 is just as good as the Sony 770. Should I just keep my Sony N460 and buy a WDTV HD Plus if I want a good media extender with Netflix streaming?

Of course it doesn't. The only devices that are compatible with the media extender for Windows Media Center are Microsoft devices such as Xbox 360 or Zune HD.

All the current Sony blu-ray players have the same networking options, but they are very limited on media streaming from a pc.

I tried out the WDTV HD Plus and returned it from the following reasons:
1. To buggy.
2. Netflix navigation froze up on me many times.
3. User interface is slow.
4. I had audio syncing issues.
5. Picture quality was poor.

As I mentioned here before, if you want a good blu-ray player that is also a decent media streamer, get the LG BD570. Also my other opinion is that if you have a computer in the same room as your Sony BDP-N460, just use your computer listen or to view to your media files.

I prefer the way music sounds from my stereo system than my computer speakers and I rather dedicate my stereo system to my TV, blu-ray player, and Xbox 360, and dedicate my computer speakers to my computer since I don't want to connect my computer to my TV. I might just keep my blu-ray player and wait for the upcoming Apple TV with the Netflix feature.

You may want to consider re-titling your/the thread, PCFan. It appears that, after owning one Sony that doesn't stream and now wanting some streaming capability, you're primarily concerned with two particular new Sonys' streaming functionalities rather than a broader 570 versus 770 feature set comparison. You might get more responses commensurate with the information you seek had/if you reference(d) streaming in the thread title.

I'm not that interested in streaming functionality so have not been staying au courant with what players do what in those regards but, in addition to noting Vor4's mention (twice) of the LG player, it sounds like you'd be better suited looking at players with stronger DLNA support. The newly-announced Oppo perhaps?

The new Apple TV is not compatible with Windows Media Center and Windows Media extender. You have to use itunes with it to stream music, videos, and pictures from your pc to the Apple TV, but it works best if you have one of the Apple Mac computers.
