Default Can I hope to achieve blu ray

Hey guys, I had a question. My setup is vista with dual core, and my vid card is EVGA geforce 7900GS. Pretty nice vid card but I'm no gamer. I wanted to make my computer blu-ray ready and I posted on here before but i had another idea that maybe i didn't consider earlier. My monitor is non-hdcp/non-hdmi but HD viewsonic X series VX2255wmb.

Now...I'm wondering...if I buy a blu ray PC drive of some sort and a new vid card (cheapest one i can get) that has an HDMI port...could I watch blu ray quality on my monitor if i buy an HDMI-DVI connector?

I haven't got much money so I'm trying to do the best I can but I don't want to watch jeopardized quality as i'm sure you guys can understand. Any help or other suggestions please??? Thanks a lot!

Oh shoot and also..if i have an nvidia card (and mobo) ...would it like it if i put another ATI card in there?

You actually should be good to go with your current setup, but you will need to use VGA cabling to connect the monitor.

You CANNOT use a DVI or HDMI-to-DVI cable to connect your current monitor to a new video card as the monitor itself isn't HDCP-compliant. According to CyberLink, your existing graphics card should be fine for playing Blu-rays, as it has the Nvidia PurevideoHD circuitry in it.

In order to use DVI or HDMI cabling to your monitor, you would need to upgrade both the graphics card and the monitor to HDCP compliant models.

The best way to test your system to see what (if any) components require an upgrade is to download the Cyberlink BD/HD DVD advisor from http://www.cyberlink.com/multi/suppo.../diagnosis.jsp .

By the way, using VGA is fine for now. If they ever enable ICT on BD movies (which isn't likely to happen any time soon) it would only play those discs at quart-resolution. But for now, it will work fine.

Hope that helps.

evga 7900gs have several variants, some have hdcp some don't
if don't, blu-ray video will only output in 480i or nothing at all.
if have, just use the same dvi will do unless if you are plugging to hdmi then get adaptor.
if you want to change cheap video card, get some nvidia 8 series card which assist in playing hd video (but their game capability cmi ).

If it has HDCP, you can use DVI or HDMI output to a monitor... ONLY if the monitor is also HDCP compliant. You can use VGA at full resolution either whether or not the graphics card is HDCP compliant.

so wait...i'm kinda getting confused then...are you guys saying that one way or another my monitor itself has to be HDCP compliant? because it's not as far as I can tell...it just says HD monitor. there's no standalone i can buy that i can hook the monitor into? and i don't think my vid card is hdcp compliant either. since it's not, if i buy another vid card, is it true that it'd be still very clear/crisp for blu ray but it'd suck for video games? i have an alright vid card now that i can use for video game so i'm not worried about that. i could just buy another card and put it in a pcie slot that's open still. but....it appears that a change in monitor is in order.....sigh...any suggestions?

If you want to use a DVI or HDMI connection between the graphics card and the monitor, both components MUST be HDCP compliant or you won't be able to play Blu-ray movies. But you really don't need to upgrade either component. Just use VGA cabling instead of DVI/HDMI -- that will work at full resolution for at least a couple of years. If ICT gets implemented down the road it would be a problem, but you'll probably be ready to upgrade by then anyway.
