Bogo - Blu-ray Forum

First off, I will say that I am guilty of joining all those who proceeded to purchase several, if not, tons of movies during the critical BOGO weeks the BD camp ran. As good as the deals were, it led me to thinking something else entirely.

I am sure that the HD-DVD camp has ran also their own version of BOGO with utter failure, however, does the BOGO that the BD ran also have any negative views with respect to certain studios still lingering on both sides or maybe wanting to join a particular side? For example, it seems that the BOGO were ran primarily during weeks of "big" HD-DVD title releases, but none other. How does this look perhaps to Warner? In particular, during the week of Transformers, would it really have been possible for BD to finally have lost a week since the beginning of 2007 if it were not for the BOGO running during that week? I mean, especially perhaps to some HD-DVD fans, they might see it as a desperate attempt on BD's side to ensure their continued dominance in the sales charts instead of just letting the sales numbers speak for themselves and see who's week it really was? In addition, we also had BOGO during Shrek 3's release I believe and given the numbers released, I am sure BD would have still won the week without the BOGO. Now, we come to Bourne's release with perhaps another strike using the BOGO deals. Does this concern anyone? We definitely do not want everyone in the BD camp to get accustomed to waiting for these special deals to occur just to purchase some BDs, but to purchase BD movies mainly because they prefer the format and not because its cheap, etc.

What do you guys think about this? Add your comments, etc.

The only thing I am afraid of, is that when the blu camp wins, the sales, discounts, BOGOs, etc will go away and the prices on the movies hover over $30. Maybe this is the reason why everyone has/will continue(d) to stock up as much as they can right now. Consider it a perk for converting early.

As I trolled the Wal-mart, BB, CC stores during the BF weekend, I couldn't help but think if there would ever be a time in which unknown movies would be on blu-ray disc (see $5 bargain bin at WM, or $1.99 at Kmart) in the future when the format prevails and dvd begins phasing out. Granted, it would take years to accomplish this, but will you see them as well?

I for once started late on this but can't wait to get caught up. As with everyone else who is short on cash at times, big bundles/discounts are a must.

While I have bought QUITE a few DVDs in the Wal-Mart bargain bins, and would love the day when you could get similar prices on BDs, I don't think it's really neccessary.

I would be perfectly willing to buy the catalog titles I really want for $9.99, and new titles for $14.95. Let DVDs have the bargain bins...

Sincerely, I don't care what the HD-DVD side think of the BOGO sales and I don't think that movie studio like Warner see that in a bad way. That shows that Sony AND Disney really want the format to win. Howerver, I agree that BOGO sales could have an impact on blu-ray buyers, but it do not. We could wait for the BOGO to open our wallet, but thoses sales are for older titles and we still buy newer titles. And if you look at the Niesen Stats, the sales are great every weeks. The majority of early adopters usually have a lot of money, so it's not a big problem. In fact, those sales could have an impact on people that wouldn't buy blu-ray if they were not in sales so it's probably a good thing in the end cause they'll inevitably end addict like a lot of us of blu-ray, and they'll eventually buy the newer titles

The way I see it is, if you have the money for the whole hd thing then you won't mind spending a bit on the movies here and there. I think the bogos will really just push people over the edge of "that movie looks decent...but I don't know if I want to buy it."

But with bogos, people are obviously a lot less conservative about their purchases. In the long run, I don't think it will affect regular sales much at all.

I've alway kind of thought the studios see right though the freebies with player and bogos when looking at HDM sales. The studios also likely take content exclusivity into consideration when they look at numbers as they are quite used to that at the box office. I really want to see HP numbers, hopefully with no special promotions that week from either side, so we can really see how things are shaping up.

It's alla bout their actual sales numbers. Nielsens and BOGOs are there for public perception and PR

Warner knows for example they sold you 5 movies when you buy the Potter box set, so if they move 125,000 Potter 5s and 75,000 box sets do you think they'll be crying?

definitely a good point ,still think the bogos move the other movies that people are on the fence on and to them it is now ,well I got this movie for half price so I didnt invest any more then a new dvd

I think studios know and see what is happening but in the end I don't think it really influences them. Let's face it, we are talking maybe one or two weeks where HD DVD might have barely won, it would not have negated the other 50 weeks where BD creamed HD DVD in some of them. The other thing is that different studios have different strategies, Fox has one price (catalogue or new) LG had them cheaper..... so why should Warner care about (for example) Disneys pricing for that one week. At the end studios compare the number of disks/sets sold and I don't think they care if it sold at 35$, 30$, 25$ or 10$, the only factor it does play is that if a studio feals peanalized for higher prices (or does not get a benefit from lower ones) then they can change their pricing strategy.

not going to happen
1) Early on in DVDs history the same thing was happening (so sales are not due to the war, it is a good way to get better pricing in replication and making more money in a small market)
2) BD will still need to compete with DVD

3) people get used to the value for smething and so increasing the price of tech is extremely unlikely (so price won’t go higher)

The BOGO sales are great! They usually do not incorporate newer Blu-Ray releases. Mainly it's just been for catalog titles. So, it's a win for everybody involved, really.

Personally, I would LOVE a BOGO sale that included Superbad. Now that would be freakin' sweet!!
