Paramount The Last Airbender 3D Blu-ray (2010) [Region Free]

Best Buy's stock system is now showing a 3D release of Last Airbender labeled "3d-bd excl spec ed" in the system with a stock date of 11/16/10. The items show as "on order" which means they are locked in for purchase from the studio. Retail is set at $39.99. My guess is it will be on sale for $34.99 during it's first week of release. 3D-BD is the coding for an actual 3D release. Excl usually denotes an exclusive to Best Buy title. Spec ed refers to a special edition release tag. So theoretically, this may be the same special edition with an added 3D disc that is a Best Buy exclusive, day and date with the standard 2D release. The same stock system marked the release of My Bloody Valentine the same way, which I also reported here....so hopefully I've proven my reliability. ;-)

Another lousy conversion in the mold of Clash of the Titans. A must miss

Wow! Nice find!

I'm REALLY hoping this turns out to be true. Unlike most, I really enjoyed the movie, and (again, unlike most) REALLY enjoyed the 3D, so this would be a Day 1 for me.

Thanks again for the find! Keep us posted.

Too many for November. I'll probably just be getting A Christmas Carol and Polar Express for now. Hopefully I'll be able to catch up later. But at least now there are going to be 3D titles in the store when I want to pick up something new.

HD-Digest's review of the German Clash of the Titans 3-D Blu-ray release said it actually made some improvements on the theatrical showing... maybe they'll do the same for this. Then again, there has been a smaller time gap.

Woo! Great find. Different from most, I actually quite enjoyed the 3D in this film. Was disappointed hearing about the standard release a couple weeks ago. I've been holding off and buying these 3D releases only when on sale since I dont have a TV, but give me a Best Buy exclusive? I'll buy it on release day (my birthday too!).

edit: Just checked Bestbuy's site, and there are indeed two placeholders for the Airbender release. From what I can see, both details exactly the same, except for the price, of which one being the price mentioned about. No mention of 3D (yet)

It won't show up on Bestbuy.com until Paramount or Best Buy announce it to the media. The placeholders are for the standard 3 disc and 1 disc versions.
It is presumed that the 3D version will be a 2-disc set with the 3-D disc and 2-D disc, but they could add a DVD and/or digital copy.

will you be able to watch the 3d disc on a 2d player and 2d tv in 2d. sometime ago, everyone was saying this would be the case with 3d. now you dont hear about it since some movies include 2d and 3d on separate discs.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and Monster House feature 3D Blu-Rays include the 2D versions by extracting the 2D cores from the 3D encodes. So its definutely possible.

However studios have a mindset that more discs equals more value and thus more sales. They use separate discs to give themselves an excuse to jack up the price. Though all 3D discs can extract a 2D core its possible for a studio to lock this ability in order to justify 2 unessesary encodes. Same reason studios include DVD and digital copies on separate discs.

Looks like someone nailed this one. It is indeed confirmed on Best Buy's website.

I think out of all the 3D movies I've seen this would be my least favorite of the 3D effects. I would probably buy a 3D copy of Clash of the Titans before this.

Cover art is up! The 3D logo is kind of huge, but whatever.

And it's a Blu-ray 3d AND Blu-ray? I'm hoping there are some extras on that other disc.

Both were rushed conversions and both have a horrid cardboard cutout effect that characterizes bad conversions. 3D conversions work by breaking a 2D image into layers of depth. If enough layers are added it can nearly be indistinguishable from native 3D material. However with minimal time comes minimal layers and that brings a feeling that your watching talking cardboard cutouts rather then three dimensional human beings.

This movie and Clash of the Titans undid alot of the good will Avatar created for 3D. Releasing these on 3D Blu-Ray while Avatar and Toy Story 3 remain 2D only is practically mad. Luckily both came out after 3D has established itself as a permenant force. Had these movies come out in 2006 or 7 its possible they would have killed the new form of 3D before it got started.

I didnt see CotT in 3D, because I heard bad things.

I saw this one however, not having heard much, and loved the 3D. Heck, I'd even call it one of the few redeeming factors of the movie. I found it looking great when it needed too, and just subtle enough in the scenes without it.

Sure, it's not going to be the same as filming it like Avatar or RE, but this was definitely one of my favorite post conversions.

Absolutely will be buying (and on my birthday too!)

To be fair, this one is apparently notably better then the one that was put in theatres.
