Default Blu-ray FAQ correction

The Blu-ray FAQ says the recording capacity of a BD is 50 GB while a HD-DVD can store 32 GB. It looks like the correct numbers should be 54 and 30.

I think it depends on which company is manufacturing the disks. i.e. Sony's Blu-Ray disks are 50GB. Though perhaps pre-recorded can be larger, (54GB).

"Though perhaps pre-recorded can be larger, (54GB)."

It is my impression that prerecorded dual layer BDs will go up to 54 GB, while prerecorded dual layer HD-DVDs will only go up to 30 GB. In the battle for acceptance by the movie studios, I believe prerecorded capacity will be a large factor. Some parts of the FAQ mention this 54 GB capacity, and some parts don't, so the FAQ should be consistent.

I think the sizes you mentioned are correct for pre-recorded discs, but the numbers in the FAQ are for recordable/rewritable media (so they differ slightly).

Some of the confusion regarding the actual size of Blu-ray Discs comes from the fact that there are 3 different sizes for single-layer discs and 3 different sizes for dual-layer discs in the Blu-ray Disc specification (which I think is to allow usage of different materials when producing the discs). The 50GB size used in the FAQ is the medium size, but I guess it might be more fair to list the formats maximum size when comparing the formats. The 32GB size comes from a Toshiba press release at CES 2004 ("A dual-layer single-sided rewritable disc with a capacity surpassing 32GB is now targeted.")

"The 32GB size comes from a Toshiba press release at CES 2004".

I researched this and this is true for rewritable discs, but HD-DVD only has a 30 GB capacity for read only discs. So BD will have 80% more capacity than HD-DVD for prerecorded movies. Somone reading the FAQ could think the difference was just 50/32 = 56.25%.

-----------------------------
1.6 How much video can you record on a Blu-ray disc?

Over 2 hours of high-definition television (HDTV) on a 25GB disc.
About 13 hours of standard-definition television (SDTV) on a 25GB disc.
----------------------------

this needs to be more specific... its confusing HD-DVD fanboys. Some of them think that blu-ray can only hold 2 hours of HD-DVD on 1 layer and they compare it to HD-DVD's 4 hours of HD on 1 layer using VC-1.

say... "Over 2 hours of high-definition television (HDTV) on a 25GB disc using MPEG** compression.
About 13 hours of standard-definition television (SDTV) on a 25GB disc using MPEG** compression."

or just update it for VC-1 only :P

is it most likely that movie companies will just use VC-1 since its better?
