Default New PS3 Owner - Need Help!

Hi,

Thanks to those on this forum I have been able to get my PS3 up & running. It is a fantastic piece of gear. I'm having one issue though - I can't get it to maintain a wireless connection with my Linksys WRT54G router.

I did the "easy" hookup on the PS3, and when I did the connection test, it can't get an IP address. I unplugged the router for a few minutes, and tried again - and it found it. But then when I checked later, i got the same message about no IP address. My connection strengh is about 47-50%, could that be the problem?

It could be. also, you might need to check if the latest firmware is already included in the PS3. because if you need a firmware update you won't be able to log in.

Are you sure you saved your settings once you got it working?

Check to make sure the router is set to hand out DHCP.

ok i had this issue with mine.....do a wired connection first and see if it works...because u use the same IP address no matter what....
now if everything is conencted correctly..ur computer shall alos me working...i will guess ur computer is connected by ethernet wire as well

ne way...do the wired conenction first...let teh ps3 detect everything....if u have security/password..WEP..wat ever......make sure all is enter etc etc

if that works...then the wireless should work as well

let the ps3 scan,,for the connection and just continue form there............oohhh and make shure for the router settin on the computer is at "obatain ip address auto"

Thanks for the replies. I am running 2.0 software (CD of version 2.0 came packed with my 40GB PS3)

I'm king of stumped because why would pulling the plug on the router and then replugging it cause it to work? And I'm kind of lost - how do I check the router is set to hand out DHCP?

On another forum someone said to disable the media Sharing Feature on the PS3 - is that worth a shot?

Lynksys also makes the booster antennas for your router if a weak signal turns out to be the issue.

You might have to flash the firmware in the linksys too.

This router doesn't do well with gaming. I would replace it with a D-link router. The linksys router WRT54G really isn't gaming compatible.

I replaced mine with a D-link router and I haven't had a problem since.

Before I purchased my apple 802.11N router I had an older Linksys that I had to update the firmware on to get it to talk to the PS3. Might check and see if you have the newest firmware

I had the same problem when I first got my PS3 and I have the same exact router. You just need to update your PS3s firmware (at least that worked for me) try putting in a recently purchased game and installing any firmware updates that come with the disc. Hope this helps.

or update the PS3 with the wired-connection to do the Downloads......

Is your setting set up for "sharing" etc?? I'm terrible with the internet stuff, and made my connection "OPEN" so I'm sure all of my neighbors are enjoying my Wi-Fi, but that's fine by me....... I just couldn't get my PS3 and Laptop to connect when it was WEP protected or whatever, and my laptop would keep dumping the signal..... couldn't figure out why.... so "OPEN" corrected my problem, but I'm sure this isn't the best way to go.

My first suggestion is to check the firmware status on your router, mine is 4.71.1 and works just fine.

As far as the security is concerned, use WPA, it is better security and works fine. you will need to input a password.

open your router page and choose
Wireless
Under basic settings
Wireless Network Mode: G-only
Wireless Network Name (SSID): make a name for your network
Wireless Channel: try channel 6, it works for me
Wireless SSID Broadcast: should be enabled
Click on Save Settings!!!

Then pick the next tab Wireless Security,
Security Mode: WPA Personal
WPA Algorithms: AES
WPA Shared Key: put a password here and use it on your ps-3 too
Group Key Renewal: 3600 seconds
Click save settings again!!!

You will need to duplicate this info on your ps-3 assuming you did the firmware update that came with the PS-3

Your PS-3 should work if all the above is done. Hope it helps!
