Default Windows media streaming to PS3 question

I'm trying to get this function to work with Norton firewall activated. It works when its de-activated but I get a DLNA error when I activate it.

It seems to be only norton which is blocking it, apparently there is an option hidden in the depths of Norton called "allow UNPN" or something like that, but I can't find it.

I'm up to date on FW2.01, using Vista and Norton. Can anyone help, is it possible?

Thanks for your time.

First off if you haven't tried Tversity to stream to a PS3, you should really give it a go. Just make sure mediaserver.exe isn't being blocked by Norton.

IMO I would think you would be better off using Vista's firewall rather than Norton's.

Doesn't really help your problem just a biased opinion of Norton products

Sorry I meant unblock mediaserver.exe for the TVersity program, if you decide to give it a go.

You can use the Windows Media Player 11.

1. Go to the "Library Tab" on the top(Between "Now Playing" and "Rip")
2. Select "Media Sharing"
3. Check the "Share My Media to:"
4. Click on "Unknown Device"(its your PS3)
5. Click on the "Allow" option
6. Click on "Settings"
7. Adjust the settings to your preference

It works without any problems for me. If Norton still gives you problems just make sure the the PS3's IP address is showing as a trusted source(or something along those lines) in Norton.

Another question...on the UNPN, did you mean UPnP? I know when you set up your PS3 network settings manually you can disable UPnP. Which is all you might need to do.

I found trust control in norton and put in the I.P of the PS3. Will reboot the PS3 when a couple demos download, hopefully that will fix it.

same topic different question

could you guys tell me what kinda files i can stream thru to the ps3?
are there like any limitations or audio that the ps3 wont allow to be streamed through?
when i stream a file through it depends on my computer to play it correct? so like if i had a 1080i file that my computers too slow to play it wont work on the ps3 either right?

when i search on google i mainly get topics from a year ago or new topics with only questions and no answers

thanks

I would highly recommend Tversity over Nero 8!

Nero 8 could not even simply index my files. I would index about 8 folders and only 4 would show up. Sometimes I would index a folder with 10 files and the index number would only increase by 3 or 4. And yes.. I waited.

Tversity works MUCH better. My 430gb of video was all loaded within minutes. The transcoder works much better than Nero as well allowing for higher quality output and pause / transport support. Nero did not even let me pause. The menu system shown on the PS3 when browsing Tversity is better than Nero as well. Not one thing Nero does better in my experience.

Ive given the PS3's i.p a trust account and the norton firewall is still blocking it for media server files. I'm begining to wonder if this is ever gonna work. Its not a big deal but I wish it would work.

You can stream just about any file to the PS3, but that doesn't mean you can play them. You will only be able to use the files that are compatible withe the PS3.

Edit: You can stream just about any Video, Music, or Picture file, but you can't use them all.

Did you try and disable the UPnP in the PS3's network settings?

It streams anything that you have in your folders("My Music", "My Pictures", "My Videos") in your computer. Like I said in a couple of posts back, that doesn't mean you PS3 can play all those files in those folders. I haven't tried those in particular. If they are PS3 compatible files then, they would play.

Jesus, I tell you what, a miracle happened.

I rebooted the ps3 and now it works, but i'm not sure whats going on.

For future reference just in case any one else is trying this -

I did the following -

Obviously set up the PS3 wirelessly first

1) Go to WMP11, Libary, media sharing
2) enable the unknown device, tell WMP11 it to ALLOW it for file sharing.

At this point, if you go to network settings on the PS3 and set media sharing server to ON, and turn your firewall off completely you should be able to scan your computer (Option to scan is on video/music/pictures at the top). An icon saying WMP11 comes up on the PS3 (takes a minute)

3) Turn firewall back on.
4) You should now lose your media serving capability.

5) In norton go to firewall settings, select the trust tab. You want to add the I.P address of the PS3. (You can find this by going into network settings > connection status on the Ps3). Put the I.P of the PS3 in there and make sure it has priveleges of trust.

6) Go to program control in norton. Make sure the 2 entries for microsoft media player have ALLOW status. (select and modify to ALLOW is reqd.)

Turn off your PS3 completely for about 20 seconds. Go to WMP11 and make sure its still open for serving. Let the PS3 reboot and if your lucky the WMP11 will be there with your firewall set to on.

I don't know if thats understandable, but im up and running. It seems a bit fiddly and sometimes a reboot is reqd.

The files will transfer as fast as the computer and the router will allow it, and the PS3 does the work to run the files. I pretty sure thats how it works, if I am wrong please correct me.
