Default Australia is 5-to-1 Blu! (with detailed data)

A story on the Sydney Morning Herald is giving us a detailed look at Australia, where Blu-ray is outselling HD DVD 5.6 to 1. Here's some numbers:

Stand-alone only players sold:
Blu-ray: 2241
HD DVD: 609

Game consoles and add-ons:
PS3: over 100,000 units sold
X360 HD DVD add-on: 2461 units sold

Discs sold since inception:
Blu-ray: more than 102,000
HD DVD: less than 18,000

http://www.smh.com.au/news/technolog...530626138.html

A very funny read -- especially the part where Paramount released the HD DVD of Transformers four weeks after the DVD, and therefore blew most of their potential sales.

that is so awesome... DUD's can't even use the "PS3 is not a blu-ray player" argument coz they are being beat in the stand-alone department.

PS3 sales have gone nuts here since the price drop, in the area where I live (about 75000 people) you virtually have to pre order a console so you don't miss out.

All 4 department stores sell Blu ray, only 1 sells DUD. Unfortunally Australias biggest online forum is controlled by HD DUD trolls who get away with saying whatever they like with impunity from the mods.

Have a look for yourself

And in other news:

Quote:
Blu-ray takes Ezy distribution path
By Chris Nicholls

SYDNEY: DVD and video game rental chain Video Ezy has joined sister company Blockbuster and will stock only Blu-ray software for the foreseeable future, according to buying general manager Richard Clutsom.

The deal will mean both chains stock an increased number of Blu-ray films, and Sony will provide 40-inch LCD televisions, Blu-ray players and Playstation 3 machines to display the material in over 200 Video Ezy and Blockbuster stores Australia-wide. Both chains will run accompanying multi-format promotional campaigns.

Clutsom said Video Ezy based the decision on demand.

“At this stage, Blu-ray is clearly the leading HD format and industry data backs that up. The future will depend on hardware sales catering to either format and we will move with those trends.”

However, John McKay, Blockbuster’s product head, said the group would only purchase Blu-ray for “the foreseeable future”, a decision taken after the US parent made the same decision.
The full story is here. You Aussies should contact the site though. The writer incorrectly states that:

Quote:
The decision will mean consumers who rent at Blockbuster and Video Ezy are unable to hire films released by Paramount, Universal, Warner Brothers, HBO Video and New Line Home Entertainment, who sell only HD-DVD.

WB releases Blu-ray movies in Australia. They also distribute HBO films in Australia, there just isn't any out on Blu-ray yet in Australia. Also New Line films are distributed by Roadshow which so far is releasing their first blu-ray next month, "Hairspray".

hmm, it works out to be about 6 titles per HD-DVD player which could be possible (dedicated and 360 addon).
