Default Playstation confusion

Greetings,
I see alot of posts about the PS2/PS3 supporting BluRay.
I believe the truth to be that the handheld Playstation is where BluRay will make is entrance. They are using small 23gig BluRay discs. The PS3 is due to be released AFTER the handheld unit, and therefore MUST support BluRay.

I am ALL about BlueRay, and I have been doing research about it for 2 years now. I hope it becomes the standard, as it has SO much more to offer then we even know.

I have also been researching or keeping an Eye on Blu-ray for about 2yrs...every since I heard about it coming from Sonys Broadband Department I've been keeping dips on it..

I doubt PSP will have Blu-ray technology but PSP2 most likely will.... UMD's are universal.

Are you referring to the small JVC object lens, or have you seen something about 3cm discs also?

Philips had a press release about their Portable Blue 3cm discs in 2002, but I haven't heard anything new about them:

I am talking about the PSP.
Im looking at some whitepapers for it right now, and it list Blu-Ray as the media to focus on. It will use small DVD, and CDs(UMD), but it has Blu-Ray as its main media type. Gran Tursmo 4 for the PSP is supposedly being developed for the Blu-Ray disc, and has already been demo'ed.

Maybe it wont be on the first run, but their objective is to have Blu-Ray in the PSP.

My understanding of the situation is that the UMD's used in the PSP are a seperate format created by Sony. I'm sure that they would not want to share any of their profits with the Blu-Ray group in terms of liscensing fees for the format. Obviously Sony has announced that the PS3 will use BD-Roms and will play pre-recorded Blu-Ray discs. I have also heard that there may well be a newer version of the PS2 that also plays pre-recorded Blu-Ray discs. Whether this will be an newer version of the PSX or what I don't know. However, I'm 99% sure that the the disc PSP wwill use is not a small Blu-Ray disc.

I’m telling you what I am looking at. It says "Main focus on media is 23.3 gig BD disc."

It says, "Device will play prerecorded BD Movies in full length, further expanding the appeal of the device."

So take it however you want, but this is an official release to the development community from Sony.

That's quite interesting, is this information available to be viewed somewhere online, or is it just privately released to PSP developers?

Its a white paper for developers, and is protected by the NDA we had to sign. I will make a call on monday, and see if we are allowed to release it. If so, ill post it in PDF format.

Aha, well I don't really have that much of an interest in reading it, I was just curious about the BD part which you've already outlined. If it is protected by an NDA you probably shouldn't be discussing it at all

I can discuss it as long as the discussion doesnt outline exactly how the subject of the talk works. So I can say it uses BD, but I cant tell you exactly HOW it reads it. I can tell you why it reads it, but not how. Thats all.

It seems to me that you're saying the UMD discs that the PSP uses will be 23 GB Blu-Ray discs. Unless Ive misinterpretted!?

Well UMD is just a bullshit term Sony invented. What it really means is, the PSP will play CDs/DVDs/ and Blu Ray.

Im not too convinced they have the Blu Ray part done, and the release of the PSP is VERY soon. But right here, on this paper in front of me, it says people who program for the PSP should use BD as the target Media.
