its weird to hear that people are more concerned about the extras than the movie itself... but of course thats the "advantage" of bd right? lol all pun aside, how is the movie itself? yet to be blown away with bd vs hd... tofs and black hawk down were a bit dissapointing, this being a newer title a lot better???

I was pleasantly surprised by the movie. I wrote it off as just another stupid "slasher pic" when it first came out but I ended up liking it.

Just be sure to watch the 'Unrated' version because, to me, the original UK ending really made the film and helped turn it from just OK to something I really liked.

And on top of that the picture and sound are really great.

You must have a problem with cables or something because the picture looked damn near perfect on my set-up and certainly wasn't anywhere near "horrible".

We watched this movie this evening on the PS3. All I can say is wow. We really enjoyed the movie itself and as dark as this movie is I could not pick out any noise. On the Ruby the blacks looks great. The playback itself was flawless on the PS3. I did not think to look at the extras though.

The movie scared the crap out of us in a few scenes too. We watched the unrated version.

We also saw rumor has it and it was another fine bluray disc. Getting really hard to enjoy DVDs anymore, so I don't watch them.

I'll check my cables tonight... maybe its one of those movies where its "supposed" to look that way lol. black hawk down looked the same when I saw it first so maybe a second time will look different.

If by "noise" you mean grain then yes there is grain on the very clear transfers like The Descent. Anything shot on film is going to have grain simply because film is nothing but grain; the picture is just made up of little pieces of the color chemical stuck to the film (check: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...2grain+good%22 in Deciazulado's & GoldenRedux's posts for a good explanation.)

I got it last night and watched it. Good movie. Quality I would say is Tier 2 on my 46" XBR3. Maybe 1. Didn't see a whole lot of noise like some have talked about. Using PS3 here.

Thx for the quick explaination, now that I relooked at it it does look that way. I think I always say noise because im just lazy and its easier.. One scene I dislike is the shot of the trees in the mountains, to me it wasent focused enough and would have looked really cool, anyone else have specific spots you dislike?

I can't find The Descent on BD anywhere. I went to Fry's and they said they don't even carry that title, went to the Best Buy at Santa Monica & La Brea and they didn't have it there, and Target didn't have it either. Also all of the BD shelves looked like they were in serious need of restocking. HD-DVD, not so much.

"I can't find The Descent on BD anywhere."

I just did a quick check for you and even Amazon is sold out. But you can get it at http://www.dvdempire.com/Exec/v4_ite...tem_id=1223045

Perhaps Blu-ray sales have been a bit high recently? Couldn't be caused by the over one million PS3s sold, could it?

It wouldn't surprise me.. All the places I went to had very low stock on BDs and before Christmas Fry's would have every single title all the time. Either BDs are selling really well or they're not manufacturing them fast enough.

If you want a great selection and great prices (lower than any other retail store I know), MovieStop is the place (if you have one near you). For instance, The Descent is $25.99. At Fry's, I saw it for 33.99. At Best Buy, I saw it for $34.99. Give it a try and let us know what you think.

So I heard on AVSF that Lionsgate faked PiP on The Descent by hardcoding the PiP on a seperate video stream. True or false?

Sorry, I just don't know how PIP can be faked. Either there is a picture in a picture or not. As long as you have PIP, why would they care how is was done?

It's about using the most out of your disc space. On HD-DVD, IME is its PiP. Basically the bandwith is comprised of the main feature and a seperate SD video stream. This SD stream can be turned on or off, depending on what you want to watch. From what I heard, the commentary track on MI:3 uses IME not only to have a running video commentary but the commentary has an effect on the feature : IE I read the review that Cruise/Abraham paused the movie and commented on the specifics of the frame. On the BD version, this part was omitted.

With The Descent, as I understood it, there are TWO main HD video streams - the feature and the feature with PiP. The former is then broken into three branches, US cut, UK cut and uncut (or something like that). I'm not sure if the PiP commentary is on the US, UK or uncut version.

well, despite having watched Kingdom of Heaven right before watching The Descent, while it was a bit grainy (at least I think it was grain) during the dark bits, the overall PQ was pretty good... not a bad horror flick either...

being a noob with all this HD mumbojumbo, where might I be able to read more about picture grain, posterization, etc... ?
