Default CES news. Sort of.

So it seems that HD DVD has blown their load already at HD DVD with Toshiba announcing a $599 1080p capable player. This apparently was the 'big' announcement at CES that HD DVD fans were salivating over.

Samsung lead the Blu-ray charge with their announcement of a $499 1080p24 capable player most likely as a direct replacement of the BD-P1000, apparently with a superior decoding chip than its predecessor hopefully with future support of a second video stream.

Wait a minute, did Toshiba just Osborne themselves?

Wow, talk about blowing sales of your just released models out of the water.

A2 - Want the 1080p/24
XA2 - The A20 looks to be about the same for $400 less.

This was a moronic thing to announce so far away from release.

And, aren't HD DVD player prices going the opposite direction to what was claimed?

"At the press conference, Toshiba announced that there have been an estimated 60,000 HD DVD units sold so far to consumers..."

Robert Zohn is arguing this is G2 units, which would lead to the 125K claim of that WSJ article.

But, why wouldn't Toshiba use the bigger number?!

Well nothing has been said about 1080p24 as of yet but I suspect it will only be a matter of firmware.

You are definitely right that the prices are going up for a fully featured player for HD DVD, whereas with BD prices are starting to come down, starting with the new Samsung, and I suspect that we will hear from Panasonic about prototypes. Sharp will enter the market and JVC will follow, Hitachi will offer at the low-end of the spectrum. To me that is what a good product is all about, good retail competition, not just one, maybe two (at best) players in the market.

I was just about to say that. Theres no way its G2 units. IMPOSSIBLE. Thats the total. Pretty pathetic. I think we'll have confirmation during tonights hd-dvd press announcement which when it ends, will end up with even more hd-dvd owners buying ps3s. i cannot wait.

Well for one they would have to show their shareholders that they had sold 125,000 standalones, and not just 60,000.

60K A2's in three weeks, with everyone complaining it isn't displayed or available in the big boxes? I won't say it is impossible, just highly unlikely. However, I would see this as very likely:

50K G1 (20K for RCA to lead to the 70K processor max)
10K G2

60K total sales from Toshiba for HD DVD. And now the A20 Osborning the A2 sales, and hence HD DVD sales, until the spring (i.e. game over)

I don't read no G2 in there...

When do Toshiba's stockholders (God help THOSE people) finally get sick and tired of this nonsense?

Even MS's shareholders are going to be starting to fidget before long at this rate.

The "HD-DVD camp" needs to stop holding the entire market hostage already. Everyone return to the negotiating table or whatever, get some checks written out to pay some people off...whatever it takes, and get this crap over with already!

Random Osborne demonstration:

Quote:
I held off a on buying the A2 or XA2 ( I was undecided). But LG threw in the proverbial monkey wrench and now Tosh with the A20 I really do not know what to get. Damn this format war it's making my decisions more difficult.
Bad, bad news for HD DVD.

If they had the deck good to go, this would have been a VERY exciting announcement for HD DVD. Toshiba has just failed Marketing 101.

I also just had this thought: Anything Toshiba does to encourage HD disc usage backfires, because it wakes up PS/3 owners to the situation.

Think about it. If you see a flashy ad, or TV commercial pushing the quality of HD DVD, and it gets you interested in trying out the BD on your PS/3, then Toshiba has spent money to sell BD.

Toshiba and Microsoft have to come up with ways of selling HD DVD while not selling the concept of HD on discs. Good luck!

More new info, Sharp is going to introduce a HDMI 1.3 equipped BD player for $1199 MSRP. Hopefully the cost will e driven down by competition the time they release in Q2.

All CE are going to have a challenge competing right now at the PS/3 level. So, upscale units will dominate. But, they need to make them really impressive.

The XA2 is impressive. If that had come out last spring, I wouldn't have been able to resist.

Remember this: The LG unit is a BD player with CD/DVD/HD DVD legacy support.

UPDATE 1-CES-LG unveils solution to new DVD format war

Quote:
For HD DVD, a format backed by a group led by Toshiba Corp. (6502.T: Quote, NEWS , Research), LG's machine can play the movies and has a simple menu, but it does not support all the interactive features included on an HD DVD disk.
No HDi, network connection, PiP?! LOL!

This thing almost seems deliberately designed to throw a monkey wrench in HD DVD. It's an expensive player that really isn't an HD DVD player, but has HD DVD fanboys going around touting it like a savior. Hi-Larry-us

Edit: Another link

Strategy Analytics at CES: LG Throws Down the Gauntlet with Super Multi Blue Player

Quote:
"Dual-standard players will help expand the market for next generation DVD players," says David Mercer, VP and Principal Analyst at Strategy Analytics. "But owners of the LG device will likely choose Blu-Ray over HD-DVD for the same title because the player does not support the full range of interactive features available on HD-DVD discs."
Almost seems like HD DVD sabotage, doesn't it?

I bet the LG drive doesn't support TL. Bye bye to that too.

The HD-A2 came out in December, after being delayed from an initial release dat around October.
