Default Theaters not giving option of 2D on 3D movies?

I went to see Saw 3D today and while i didn't want to see it in 3D i didn't have a choice because there were no 2D option.

According to this http://www.cinemamontreal.com/showti...20/Saw_3D.html

There's only ONE theater in Montreal that has a 2D version!

Whatever happened to giving the consumer a choice? I know the movie is called Saw 3D(!!!) but still, give the consumer a choice! Is it because it had the 3D in the title? I don't want to see every single blockbuster in 3D dangit!

And what scares me the most is next summer, when theres going to be a truckload of 3D movies and theater owners want to make more money so why in the hell would they give the option of putting the same movie in 2D?

Same thing for Jackass 3D and Piranha 3D, i didn't have a choice to see them in 3D (to be fair both those movies were cool in 3D, it's only SAW that had really poor 3D)

Back when the craze started after Avatar i remember having the choice in 3D, i went to see Clash of the Titans in 2D. But now i don't see 2D fairing well in the coming months!

Next summer when theres gonna be a 3D movie coming out almost every week i really don't see the theater owners putting a 2D version of the same movie up against the 3D version and that frightens me!

Anyone else?

So.....are you blaming the theater, or the studio?

(Yeah, you see 'em come back in 2-D versions...About a month into the run, after the one or two 3-D screens in the plex has already been taken up by the new, and more profitable, draw of the week, and the old titles are banished to the back of the hallway. Maybe you just have to be patient.)

I guess that is how Saw made 24 million.

Haven't actually encountered this issue yet. Our local plex has always given a 2d counterpart to view, with the exception of Step Up 3d.

Basically it comes down with all recent prior 3d releases, it really is rarely worthwhile releasing in 2D, as the vast majority of people have decided that is how they prefer to see films that are in 3d. SO really it has come down to consumer choice.

This as been happening to me as well. I can't blame them, they make more money like that and people just rush out to pay the extra money to see it in 3D, what else would you expect theaters to do? It's all about 3D now a days. I will just skip the theaters, it's been getting out of hand anyway for me. It use to be fun to watch movies on big screen but now a days, people are rude, texting, talking on phones, images are not that amazing, sound and equipment is not being properly used.....so why would I want to be extra money for all this? I might as just stay home, wait a few months for a rental, decide if I want to buy the Blu-ray or not (I never blind buy) and maybe save some money to have a good sound system instead at home.

Not true at all. I thought the same thing myself but for a few movies I waited a few weeks for them to show 2D and guess what, they didn't. I hate when people talk about what happens in their area like it happens everywhere. I am not so lucky here. A new theater opened up on Monday here so I hope they are a bit better then Cinemark.

if you have more than one theater in town and they're showing the same movie most likely they're showing both. The theater next to me shows just 3-D sometimes with certain movies. On the other side of town they have that same movie in both 2-D and 3-D.

I would think you could screen any 3d film in 2D by screening only the right or the left eye image for a given showing. So if 2 showings a day were in 2D, problem solved.
I love 3D, but I think it's foolish not to offer a 2D option. I especially don't intend to see converts in 3d, and this might hurt rather than help the overall BO draw.

Yeah but the theaters dont think that way. I would be ok with 2 showings a day but i dont even get that half the time. Those 2 showings in 2D is money not gained having it in 3D so they can care less what i want.

If you don't want to watch it in 3-D and the theaters in your area are only showing it in 3-D, just wait for the blu-ray and watch it in the comfort of your own home.

I do that for many movies but sometimes a movie just has to be seen in the theaters. I used to go to 1 or 2 movies a week. I am now down to 1 or 2 a month becuase of the 3D issue and raising cost.

that's what I do--- there's only a few movies a year that are worth seeing on the big screen-- most of the time paying twenty bucks or less for a blu-ray is half the price of going to the theatre (assuming you are not going alone)

I live in a larger city, so I have several theaters to go to and have not seen this problem, but I fully sympathize with those who do have this problem. That is just dumb that theaters do not give the option of 2D. There is a large enough consumer base of people who won't see it in 3D and people who CAN'T see films in 3D that the theaters are losing costumers.

Every single person who encounters this problem should speak to a manager and let them know 'you lost a ticket sale because you do not have a 2D option'. Maybe this will make them aware of just how many people want their option.

That being said, I love 3D.

I think it totally blows that there isn't a 2D option in some places. I feel bad for the people who want to see a movie and either don't like 3D, can't see the 3D, or have side effects from the 3D. The theaters and studios need to wake up to this problem.

Likewise, it's ridiculous that they didn't give us the option to watch this Saw movie in 2D. It cost me $14 and I watched it during matinee hours! What a ripoff!

I live in West LA and just did a search for the 2D version of Saw. 1 theater, a small no-name theater has it playing. They also have the only 2D version of Jackass.

The 3D version of Saw is playing at 16 theaters and Jackass 3D is at 14 theaters.

This is just an example of the theaters in a 10 mile radius. It used to be that only a few screens had 3D but most of the majors have upgraded all of their screens now. I believe the local AMC 16 has 3D on all of their screens now. By next holiday season even the small theaters will most likely have 3D on the majority of their screens.

And it's going to get even worse this summer with Transformers and Green Lantern and all the animated movies and the two Marvel movies and Pirates of the Carribean and I'm sure I'm forgetting alot!

How in the hell is there going to be a 2D option with so many 3D movies clogging the theaters up?

I don't mind 3D but i would preferably only want to see the ones that were shot and meant to be in 3D (in IMAX too!) but for the converted ones i'd like to have the option of seeing them in 2D!

You just answered the question, why would they care about giving the option of 2D when they can charge $14 for a 3D ticket.
