Default thinking about boycotting Amazon over this

Damn I love Amazon for the great deals and awesome shipping deals, but after reading this, about a book they refuse to remove from their library, I'm just not sure.

Sick to my stomach.

Sure the book is gross and imho wrong, but amazon is right in what they are saying. Plus having not read the book it could be about pedophiles and how they do what they do, and not in any way commeding or supporting there actions (wather discussign there mnentality), but is using this to try and get more free advertisment.

Looks like they banned it - not for it's content though, it appears they banned it for fear of being boycotted...

The fact that it was even published or written is worse. I'd say anyone who buys it should just be locked up on the spot...

Censorship has always been a bad thing...... unfortunately with "Free Speech" we must endure heinous things from guttural people, but with the roses come the thorns

Never wish for more censorship.......... it's just bad.

When I saw the thread title, I'll tell you my first thought (off topic sorry)

I know there are Sony "Fan-boys" and "PS3 Fan Boys" and Blu-ray Fan Boys, or whatever it may be.... and I never understood these people...... (A fan boy being something way different from someone who really likes something..... more or less someone who refuses to see the bad in what he/she likes, and tries to find the bad, or "creates" the bad in other things.... like "I like Sony, so I'll trash everything Toshiba makes" for instance)

Anyways.... With that said.... I'm about as much of an Amazon Fan-Boy as it gets!!!!

Agreed. There will always be material that offends someone's senses / sensibilities, but if you're an advocate of free speech / protecting the First Amendment, then all speech has to be protected: good, bad and everything in between. I'm not advocating the material in question (which I find reprehensible), but the author has a voice (as do I), and we should both be allowed to express them without fear of reprisal.

Fear not, Amazon.com/.ca/.co.uk/.de/.fr has indeed removed this book from it's database. Amazon.com still lists a kindle edition of it however when you click on it you get a 404 document not found page.

The authors "voice" should be silenced. Plain and simple. This wasn't a "philosophical" book this was an instruction manual. Instructing POS pedophiles how to use finger cots instead of condoms on their younger victims is indefensible. Besides, what first amendment "right" does that author have to have his book sold. He can write as much trash as he wants. No one is under any obligation to publish it or sell it.

Publicity like this is probably what the author hoped for. Sales have jumped the ebook to 154th last night.

Okay, this is tricky because I am not a constitutional lawyer, so what's covered under the Bill of Rights may / may not be applicable in this instance.

The freedom-of-speech clause in the First Amendment serves as a boundary from the government on the issue of censorship, but it does not extend to private parties regarding what can / can not be published. You are correct in that no one is obligated to publish or sell such material; it is voluntary. The refusal to carry any material is one exercising his/her rights of private ownership and liberty (which the government is supposed to protect).

Freedom of speech is entrenched in private-property rights. No one is obligated to publish the author's material; it is done solely at the publisher's discretion. In this case, the author secured a publisher, but Amazon is exercising their right (as a private entity) by no longer listing and/or carrying it.

I believe EFF founder Jacob Hornberger summed it up best: "People have freedom of speech only when government is prohibited from suppressing the most unpopular and irresponsible forms of speech."

I bet after about a year of sales the good old FBI will be asking AMAZON to hand over their sale list for this book. What better way in America to track down peds and lock them up.

Good going Amazon.
