Default Sony to Include Portable File on BD

Interesting. It would be pretty cool to already have a version handy to transfer to the PSP.

http://kotaku.com/gaming/blu+ray-sho...vds-227862.php

Quote:
Sony Pictures Entertainment will include portable files on Blu-Ray DVDs that can be transferred without a download, David Bishop, head of Sony's home entertainment unit, said in an interview this week at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Sony may add the feature this year, Bishop said. "It's not currently part of anything on our current release schedule, but we'll probably roll it out sometime this year," Bishop said on Jan. 8.

Perhaps this is Managed Copy for the PS/3? The copy will be undoubtedly well protected with a DRM.

Oh, the beautiful irony if the PS/3 is the first Managed Copy device!

Imagine if Apple cut a deal with the BD studios to include a version of the film to work on the iPod Video, now that would be worth something. Especially since none of the other BDA members produce PMPs, Sony and Samsung don't that's for sure.

I bet its a 480 x 272 so it fits PSP and the iPhone.

That's neat, would be nice to have some reason to have that 4gb of memory stick duo for my PSP.

That would be cool, but I doubt Sony would go for it working on the iPhone, they wouldn't want to give it an advantage over the Walkman phones, which to me are superior anyway.

I think the iPod Sony would agree to as it is so ubiquitous, and they have no direct competitor to it.

Actually, UMD movies are encoded at full 720x480 (same as DVD), so it would be possible that they include a file at this size on the disc. Either way, this is great news as they will probably be unprotected MP4 files!

I don't have any reason to download any movies to anything, but I am glad to see this development. I think it will create even more desire for Blu-ray and leave HD-DVD even further behind.

Doubtful. Trust me they will have plenty of DRM to prevent that.

This is a way of eliminating UMD for movies. They'll start using BD discs to distribute movies for PSP.

- A lot cheaper retail prices than UMD discs
- Counts as a BD sale in the war
- Encourages PS/3 sales (BD drives?) to PSP owners
- EDIT: Encourages PSP sales to PS/3 owners.

Absolutely brilliant idea.

Gary

I'd be on the lookout for a 8gb pro duo card if this happened.

Well rumour is that in the next incarnation of the PSP we will see a slot loading MiniBD drive as opposed to the UMD drive, with games released on MiniBD playable on the PSP and PS3, though I have no idea how they could get a MiniBD to work on the full sized drive on the PS3.

Not too sure what to make of that rumor myself. For one, it would be a PSP2 at that point, and currently, that could well jump the power consumption signficantly.

That said, I attribute that solely to rumormilling for the moment.

Possible idea/thought: they want to change the way the RemotePlay streams so it's possible to stream over broadband internet to your PSP through any hotspot. They also said they wanted you to be able to play movies that are in your home unit when away. A version on the bd meant for the PSP's resolution would be a very evident step in that direction.

Therefore : Spiderman 3 will be a title to implement this!
