The Notebook is definitely a woman's movie and my wife likes it. Now, Close Encounters of the Third Kind should belong in everyone's collection period.

Close Encounters was my first BD purchase for $35 about 18 months ago. I still don't think I paid enough for it.

How can anyone answer that question if they don't know what you like? There are plenty of great films that may not be of interest to a particular person.

Close Encounters is the Steven Spielberg masterpiece about an encounter with aliens. It was released around the same time as Star Wars in 1977. It's an effects film, so it needs to be watched on a large monitor with great sound. In 1977, I enjoyed this movie far more than I enjoyed Star Wars. While both are fantasies, Close Encounters was more realistic and it's as much a commentary on life in middle-class California as it is how the U.S. deals with the encounter.

There were at least two versions of the film. In the "special edition" of the film, a few scenes that critics came down upon were shortened (as when a lead character plays with his mashed potatoes), but it had an extended ending where you see much more of the aliens' ship.

The Notebook is a Nick (son of John) Cassavetes film which also features his mother, Gena Rowlands. It's a love story.

CE3K is great...... and my buddy is in town right now, and we're getting ready to watch it....... It's worth $30+ easy..... so don't worry about that one.

The other...... well... my wife likes that one

The Notebook would have been better
[Show spoiler]without having the whole reading out of the journal to remember.
For me, really the only thing redeeming is Rachel McAdams. Gorgeous.

Thanks for reminding me to order Close Encounters. Great price. And there goes more money spent on blus for the week.

i know i'm in the minority here but:

The Notebook> Close Encounters of the Third Kind

i'm a big McAdams and Gosling fan, so that of course helped The Notebook be enjoyable for me (4/5) but CEOTTK was just okay imo. i didn't like it all that much. it's not bad, but much slower paced and the last 30 minutes (with the
[Show spoiler]endless light / musical show
) was excruciating. i could never sit through it again. as soon as it ended, i was figuring out how much to sell it for.

CEOTTK had absolutely ZERO replay value for me. and while The Notebook doesn't have a whole lot either, i can at least watch that once year and not feel like i'm on a long, boring road to hell.

I completely agree. If they had just
[Show spoiler]made the movie about McAdams and Gosling and cut out the Garner/Rowlands stuff
, the movie would have been 3000% better.
