I wonder why Universal isn't putting this out in the States yet?

Oh well, Universal tends to be region-free with their releases, so I'm sure this will be too...

These quotes do it for me everytime

And possibly my favourite (racist and bigoted which is why it's so funny):

"Oh, pardon me. For some reason you sounded a little taller on the radio."

They just don't make 'em like that any more.

£6.99!!??!

Order placed immediately! Can't believe it's so damn cheap.

EDIT: HMV was still adding this as £11.99 when placed in the basket and at checkout, so ordered from Amazon.....

I ordered it from Amazon on the 24th for £12.59. Saw the post here saying it was now £6.99. I decided to chance it and send them an email asking for the difference to be refunded. They agreed.

Got mine today and watched it. You know, there are a number of sound cues missing. It's stuff you probably wouldn't notice unless you have seen the movie 30+ times like I did growing up. I checked the special edition US version and it's the same, however, the original DVD release has all the missing elements.

I think they re-done the sound for the SE DVD and -as you know- it has many problems (they changed/replaced sounds etc) and this continued over to the HDDVD and Blu-ray.

It's not perfect I know and I love the movie but I'm not about to get all upset like I did with the bastardisation of the real Star Wars trilogy. This is the best the movie's ever looked and it doesn't sound perfect but it not been had words removed/censored (my old DVD did IIIRC) and I'm very happy with it.

We have to live with these annoyances where companies won't invest.

I got my copy yesterday and A-B'd the Blu-ray with the HD-DVD. The transfers are identical. The featurettes on the HD-DVD were dropped unfortunately. But at least there was no DNR job by Universal.

BTW, I also got Liar Liar and that's also identical to the HD-DVD. Which is NOT a good thing since the HD-DVD had a mediocre transfer. Plus again they dropped all the extras. And for some odd reason, the bitrate is extremely low on the Blu-ray.

Scan of the UK cover here

US HDDVD here

Yeah, there's no making of Loaded Up And Truckin' (20mins) which was on the SEDVD and HDDVD. Maybe it'll reappear in the USA. Odd they did that but since there isn't yet a USA release maybe there's some reason.

Universal seem to be more interested in quantity of releases which I don't really have a problem with because we've had SEs of many of their recent very bland Blu-rays and those Blu-rays -in the main- and especial Smokey and The Bandit have damn fine transfers compared to any DVD.

I think Smokey and The Bandit was one of the first HD discs I seen (first was Mad Max 2 -blew me away) and the picture quality floored me. Years and years of VHS and DVDs didn't prepare me for the leap in quality. I only bought the HDDVD ($2.99) when HDDVD collapsed as a format. I still have 60 HDDVDs which I'll always keep.

Disc review: "...stocky blacks..."

Bit unfair on the score for video but I can see where he's coming from. We need new review scales. There's no way you can have Shrek 3 or a 'new' film's video quality in the same parallel scale as something as old, grainy (wonderful), worn and real film as the Bandit.
