How is it that Toshiba has any say over the MSRP of the discs? Isn't that a studio based decision? I mean isn't that the reason people blame the high priced Fox BDs on Fox, rather than the BDA?

I don't understand how they can influence prices either. I mean, Toshiba already makes the majority of the players and apparently, they have control over the price of discs..and there are people out there worried about Sony's 'invisible hand' of the HD market.

This is great news for us - a price war means cheaper Blu-Rays in the end...

Okay, I could end up being wrong here. But I think there has been some big misunderstanding where some reporter averaged some disc prices and came up with MSRPs that were lower for HD DVDs, then this got turned into Toshiba doing some subsidizing to get the MSRPs lower. I doubt this is happening. They might sponsor sales, but this looks to me like some misinformation that ended up getting spread in new ways. I don't recall where I saw the original thing that looked like a mistake (at least that is my memory), but I think it was a few days ago and was in an article with more than one mistake in it. Unfortunately, a lot of the writers writing about this format war don't really know what they are talking about.

I've got $700 invested in two players, do they think I really care about a couple of bucks. If its on both I buy BD, easy.

I don't think $29.99 for a movie is to much on BR. The way BR is going now with adding more special features and providing awesome picture and sound. I think right now the price is right. Look at it this way. If there's a movie you really like and you want all the special features you can get, go ahead and get the BR disc. Standard 2-disc movies are $24.99 anyways. So why not pay $5 more dollars. $5 for better picture and sound.

Toshiba would really have to be desprate to try to pull a stunt like that. Oh wait they are. I don't think Warner would stick around with them if they lowered the prices on there movies just to get at least more person a month to convert to HD-DVD. I don't think Toshiba can do it anyways, but the way things are going I wouldn't be suprised if they went behind everybodies back and lowered the prices. I think Warner would leave. Paramount can't though. They're stuck.

I don't know, I think if they wanted that, it'd be more an issue of the DVD Forum or HD-DVD PRG doing it.

May just be talking about stopping the flipper-coasters. I dunno it's odd and bizarre.

toshi is shooting itself in the leg... again. I was at target today, and there was a couple who were browsing for Bourne Ultimatum. The wife picked up DUD and said we can watch it in our new $98 player. The husband picked up the SD, saying that with the up-conversion, it's basically the same as the DUD disc, and it's half the price. THEY BOUGHT THE SD!!!

so much for championing up-conversion. now no one will buy their DUDs. Even if they reduce their DUD price, SD is still cheaper.

I have seen no evidence that their prices have dropped at all.
In fact if they did, the studios and retailers would just bring it back up cause that is what people are paying, and it is the same as Blu-ray.
Besides, if they did drop a whole 2 dollars, it could easily be said that this is cause it is a cheaper product... cheaper and less capable with less storage and bandwidth.
Also, why can't BD lower theirs in response? I doubt we will see anything at all!
