Default Can't get proper picture/aspect ratio on 4:3 SD television

I need your help!

I got a new Blu-Ray player, the one offered for $60 through Disney's promotion. I already have my PS3 hooked up to my HDTV, so this player will be for my secondary TV, which for now is temporarily a standard definition TV (4:3).

Even though I set the player's settings to output to a 4:3 television, everything I see on it is squished, whether it's a movie, or even just the player's menus (You know, like when the full widescreen picture is squished into a square area). No matter what I try, I can't get it to properly display the picture on my television. Anybody know what I'm doing wrong??

Try checking the TV set up. Look for Widescreen, Full, Zoom.

My tv has no such settings Not even any mention of tv size/shape, aspect ratio, anything like that. (it's an older TV - probably at least 10-15 years old)

How are you hooking it up? With standard RCA cables? If so, then check the output settings for the blu ray player and make sure that it is not set to HDMI or component. I think some players have a setting like this and I think it could affect aspect ratio.

I wasn't aware that a blu ray player could be hooked up to a standard television set.

It does have output connection type settings, but it is set to RCA (which I'm using - the TV doesn't have HDMI or component). I have a bad feeling it just plain isn't going to work on this tv. More incentive to buy my new one sooner than later.

Yeah, it hooks up and works, but at least on this tv with no aspect ratio settings, it won't display properly.

...Trust me, I would prefer not to be using this TV. We're buying another HD eventually, but I wanted to get this other BD player hooked up now as we wanted to use Netflix on this tv for the kids.

It should work. I also have a situation where I'm temporarily using plain-old-vanilla video line out into a 4:3 analog TV. I've done this with both an OPPO player and a Sony player and it works fine. There's a setting in your player somewhere (go to the setup menu) that controls this. Make sure the player is set to 480i. There may be another software control that determines what to do when the aspect ratio doesn't match your TV. Some players have a specific setting that asks you what the aspect ratio of your TV is. If yours has one, make sure that is set properly as well.
