Lightbulb I've started my conversion today ......

Hey guys, just bought myself a PS3 and am returning my 360 add-on tomorrow. CES changed my mind about things, I mean, no title announcements from Universal? No other studios AT LEAST going neutral? Not to mension Digital Playground. My only problem is; who am I going to get to buy my red cases? Hopefully, I'll get some money back so I can replace my HD library w/ Blu-Ray. What's funny about the whole thing is that it was my wife who started it all. She saw the movie list and the up-and-coming list for the future and she I asked me "what was I thinking going HD-DVD?" I guess that's why she's my better half. Anyway, glad to be on board. Any movie suggestions? I need gorgeous picture w/ fantastic sound; you know, the best of the best.

Eric

On AVSF check the tier system, and look at tier 0 and top of tier 1 for good looking movies.

I would sell those HD-DVDs while you still can or wait 25 years and sell them as collectors items.

As you wish. Thanks for all the help, and that AVS list is great as well. I'm trying to convert my parents and brother. This is definitely a good place to start.

Why did you return your HD-DVD addon? At least you have those Universal movies to watch..

I wouldn't return it, I would keep it, enjoy your movies. Save up and buy a PS3 separately and not worry about any format war like me . Still it saddens me when I hear someone jumping ship on either format on what appears to be nothing more than rhetoric and hype. HD DVD has 41 studios supporting the format. As far as I can tell, and I maybe wrong Blu Ray only has the 7 studios they have been championing. Universal maybe the only exclusive MAJOR studio of the big 8 currently backing HD DVD. Still there is Paramount and WB gladly supporting both formats. So what if Universal is focusing on their back catalog, that's a good thing. If you know anything about their history that is an EXTENSIVE list of films. If you need some reassurance about the validity of HD DVD as a format Bandi Visual (the largest producer of Japanese Animation) switched sides and they were an original Blu Ray backer to going HD DVD exclusive. Add to that list New Line Cinema, HBO, Studio Canal, Weinstein Company, the adult film industry among others and I wouldn't be so confident HD DVD is going anywhere anytime soon. Just sit tight, relax, and enjoy the ride. Just be sure to get a PS3 in the meantime

That sounds like rhetoric and hype to me. Please do me a favor and list the 41 studios that are supposedly backing-up HD DVD (not that I would know them if you could list them), because I would like to know them (your sources as well). Probably 38 of the studios (if they are indeed 41 studios for HD DVD) will make titles that sit on the shelves...like these: La Mentira

A Stained Glass Christmas

6 Brothaz In A Cadillac

...just space fillers...ROFLMAO

No they haven't switched sides. That is why I have Ghost In The Shell: Innonence (and someday...Steamboy) in my family room on Blu-ray (was just released on Blu-ray 12/6/06 in Japan). Please explain how that would make ANY sense. Japan is their biggest market. Blu-ray has all but killed HD DVD in Japan (96% of all HD sales are for Blu-ray), but they would decide to be an HD DVD exclusive studio?! Hell, Blu-ray has been outsells HD DVD recently in the US by a nice margin, but I digress.

New Line Cinema, HBO, Weinstein (Genuis Products), Warner Bros., and Paramount Pictures will support Blu-ray as well (so their titles don't really count). Studio Canal supports HD DVD but their titles have not even been listed (I believe...please list titles if I'm wrong).

So, we really come back to Universal. Roughly, 10% of the movies available will be Universal titles. This is no big loss from a numbers standpoint.

If you a strapped for cash and want to buy more movies for your player, return the add-on. If freeing up the cash to buy more movies is not an issue, then keep the add-on. One thing is almost a guarantee. Blu-ray will win this format war and everyone will know the end is close by end of summer.
