Default Interesting Observation of Bitstreaming or Linear PCM

Why is it that there are a few DVDs in my collection that sound better when I send a Bitstream from my PS3 to my Onkyo 705 to hear Dolby Digital soundtracks??

Many sound fine through Linear PCM but I must say that the Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring sounded much more satisfying with deeper bass when I set my PS3 to Bitstream over HDMI.........

Obviously I listen to Blue Ray's lossless audio via LPCM but my DVD collection is certainly bigger. Any ideas??

I have no problem setting my PS3 to Bitstream at present but was wondering what all you though..

Cheers!

you can also toggle back and forth during a movie...hit the triangle button and go to AV Settings

Also, when you send a bitstream, the receiver is doing the decoding, and when you send PCM the player is doing decoding. So, the receiver you have probably has better decoders as well to enhance sound quality.

I actually forgot about that shortcut, crack. Thanks for the reminder...

Glad to see that it is nothing really wrong with my setup. Probably is true that the Onkyo can decode better than the PS3 alone...

I think he is referring to the tried and true Dolby Digital and DTS (Lossy) codecs....

Good question.......All I can say is what I am hearing......Sometimes (Not at all times) letting the receiver decode the PS3 bitstream for DD or DTS does sound fuller at times than passing this over LPCM...Weird indeed....

Maybe it is changing from multi to THX mode and removing the bass/treble ?
