Default Guitar Hero III update

Released today from the looks of it.

They seem to have addressed issues relating to HDTV lag.

Notably, they finally included an option to A/V sync, by allowing calibration of video independently of audio.

Interestingly, I had a rather lengthy discussion with Activision tech support about this issue, citing how it was corrected in Rock Band. I see my protest that he forward the issue to the dev team actually materialized in a proper patch.

Enjoy!

Screw Guitar Hero III and the Activision horse they rode in on (that doesn't make much sense, but you get my drift).

Yeah, I hear you. Nothing rocks more than having your customers beta test your software for you...

What exactly did they do to address this issue? I just bought the game today and played it, and I don't want to brag, but I am very good at all the previous games. I play GH3 today, and there was big time lag. It was like I was a fration of a second behind everytime I tried to play every note. It pisses me off so much that I would love to take it back. I downloaded an update for the game today when I first got it, so was that the apparent fix? I hope not, because it still seems to lag.

Interesting. I'll have to download the update too. I was another one that was VERY annoyed by the fact that I was now suddenly a fraction of a second behind on notes in this version. Would have taken it back if I could because the PS2 version doesn't have the lag. Hopefully this patch fixes it.

To the above poster, it sounds like you have to go into the calibration screens to actually adjust for the lag manually -- it won't just fix it automatically. That's my guess from the sounds of it.

I can't find specifics but apparently it addressed the following:
* Improve Online Quick Match results and reduce "Failed to Connect to Server" messages.
* Introduce calibration screen improvements, helping users with high lag AV systems, and Playstation 3 users with Dolby Digital enabled.
* Add the Co-Op Quickplay mode for Playstation 3 users.
* Enable the Hyperspeed cheat to work in online games.
* Include various stability improvements and fixes

I can say that I used to have major calibration offsets running over HDMI (150ms) so pre-patch I played over composite ugh...

Following the update, my HDMI lag calibration is about 70ms audio 45ms video. Not bad given the les paul has about 37ms delay on it via the dongle.

I will say that it took many many calibration attempts to get it running well. Calibrating audio and video separately is much more difficult than the prior method, however when done properly, makes the game MUCH more playable.

I too was a master of the previous games, and was ready to forget about GH3, but I think there's hope. I still notice a few bugs (audio cut outs and guitar-related issues) but it's a drastic improvement and shows there's hope for this game after all...

Now lets release the patch to allow the guitar to be played in Rock Band and allow ps2 guitar hero games to be played and we are really getting somewhere.

The patch seems to have fix most of the lag, but now im like completely missing some keys sometimes, like they dont register at all. But i did improve on all the songs i had a chance to play after the patch. When i did the cal i got 0ms correction for video and 125ms correction for audio . Im going to try to cal again since i missed some of the audio ones and i only did it once i was in a hurry. This was my first guitar hero game and i didn't think it was and issue till a played a friends wii .

I didn't have any noticeable lag before, but since installing the patch it does seem to be hair easier to "synchronize."

Well, take heart in that the PS3 version doesn't send mono-channel audio at least .

Yeah, I've been having that problem since the day the stinking thing was released. The patch sort of helped but not completely -- there are times when I KNOW I'm pushing the button and hit it just right, yet NOTHING happens and I miss the note. Very frustrating and has kind of ruined the game for me. Not sure if it's the game or the guitar.

Innovative sure, but better?

See, I played Rock Band and while I'll admit its great fun for parties, I really have no interest in the game. I thought the guitar was crap, and the song-playing interface was terrible. The high notes on the guitar are an excuse to break a streak. Did not like the venue setlist idea, and thought that Expert difficulty was laughable. Found the soundtrack stale, and much prefer the sadistic shredding GH3 has to offer.
