Default PS3 Intercooler Vs. Fan

I have a 40 Gig PS3 and currently have a box fan, that I use for backround noise for sleeping, blowing directly on my PS3. I usually turn this on when its been on for over 45 min. I was curious as to how many other people do this. Also how much cooler does the Intercooler make the PS3.

I wouldn't use any intercooler products to be honest. they're badly designed, and tend to overtax the internal fans

I don't use anything extra and it has never come close to overheating. I don't think the fans have ever been on the highest speed either.

The future gaming consoles should have liquid cooling systems. That way, there is no need for vent, which means that dust can't get into the system. And, a liquid cooling system means that its going to be quiet.

Hopefully, the next consoles will incorporate this. They should've already...!!!

I hope they'd use a liquid cooled gaming system soon or develop a near heatless chip. But a liquid cooling system that cools down a bike or car engine just might be overkill for a gaming console, especially when the PS3 is already so quiet.

Default Intercoolers are warranty-voiding deathtrap...

Their design promotes unit failure. Go google threads about them at the playstation network forums. MHO.

I run two 3" PC fans behind my PS3 pulling air away from the rear exhaust vent, I also have two more Illuminated PC fans on top of my 46" Samsung pulling air up away from the tv. I run them through a 3amp 12v power supply with a 25-Ohm Rheostat from Radio Shack to control the speed/noise/brightness.

the fans are vertical behind the PS3 and XBOX 360.

Sorry about the cell phone pics.

the ps3 was to have a small lines of coolnat runnin tru the circuit board,,,,,that is what i heard...

n e way there is no need to have intercooler for ur ps3,,,,unless u have it locked up in a glass case....but even if u have it locked up in a glass case the intercooler/fans wont make sense cause it wil be circulating the same old air....jus speand ur money on a game or something

Dreamcast was the first to have heat pipes. 360 also has heatpiples and I'm sure PS3 does too.

You should not use any attached extra fans on your game system

I agree that using the Intercooler or similar devices aren't worth the money. If the heating becomes that bad, turn off the system and let it cool down before using again. Just try to keep it in a well ventilated area and there should be no problem. If anyone is thinking of getting one look at the product reviews at gamestop.com. Most are negative and they will void any warranties. I'm sure if it is a persistent problem Sony will fix it or come out with a fan of their own. And for God's sake DO NOT get any of these on Ebay. Most are crappy little fans from China, and they look like junk.

the best way to keep your system cool is to not clutter things around it. keep all the vents free of debris and anything that might block the fans from doing its job.

No one will come out with a fan, because the systems have very specific airflow in mind

If you do anything ,get one of those laptop coolers that will sit underneath. they don't interfere with airflow

And for pete's sake don't put the console vertical.Optical drives don't like being vertical, it looks silly, and thermographs have proven that it interferes with cooling on both 360 and PS3

I have a 60GB and I too have a fan in my room for circulation and what not but I have only use it on my PS3 if it is going to be running/downloading for an excessive ammount of time (5 or 6 hours) other wise I don't worry about it overheating.

I have never heard anyone say NOT to place the PS3 vertically. If anything, I have heard that it operates better vertical since the heat rises out of the unit more efficiently. Is this not the case?

The original PS2 was known to last longer when it was vertically mounted. My original PS2 lasted 5 years vertically mounted before it crapped out on me and I have a feeling that had as much to do with the 4th move of it's life and the fact that it was with me in college as it did anything else.

Aesthetically, mounting it vertically to me looks better than horizontally but that's a personal preference and certainly no reason to say it should or should not be mounted one way or the other.

They would not design a console to be mounted vertically if it messed with the optics. That is just a wrong statement to make (referencing Wicky's comments above). My PS3 has been vertically mounted since day one with nary a problem, heat has never been an issue and it has worked flawlessly...............knock wood (even though I don't need to because it's not an xbox 360).

My understanding is that vertically works better for heat dissapation as well, much as a chimney creates a vaccuum for a fireplace the body of the PS3 acts as a "chimney" for the heat it creates and helps it escape more efficiently. Since heat rises if you mount yours horizontally it is rising into an area with no vents, but vertically there are vents in the side. I haven't seen any "thermographic" evidence but I'm guessing that if it showed more heat coming from a vertically mounted unit that would be a GOOD thing since it means the heat is out of the system.

I would certainly think we would have heard reports of heat problems for vertically mounted units if this was the case.

In fact, going back to my PS2 example, there were reports that horizontally mounted PS2's suffered overheating issues and the common "fix" was to mount it vertically to improve the airflow through the unit.

Thanks Pilam69, that is what I have heard before. I have recently placed mine vertically and it seems to run great. Do you disagree with this Wicky?
