I have owned my 60GB PS3 since January '07, and have used it extensively to watch movies on DVD and Blu-ray. That's not to say I don't play games on it, It just happens that it replaced my old DVD player because it is so darn good at it. I play games a lot.
So, if on the box it says it supports DVD-Rom, why does it not work? I've tried several DVD's, and know it does not work. I haven't found a Blu-ray yet (If you have, please tell me the title so I can try it) that is online enabled for special stuff, so I can't vouch for that either way. I just know that on any DVD (Such as the one I just watched, "The Bourne Identity" Explosive Extended Edition), if it says DVD-Rom features, and I click them, the screen always comes up telling me to insert it in a Windows DVD-Rom drive ('95 or higher, ha). I have no other problems with my PS3 at all, just the false advertising part that is on my box right here (Shouldn't require a firmware update if it is on the box). It's not like DVD-Rom features are all that exciting, and I know this forum is called "Blu-ray", but you guys are smart, tech-junkies, and I'm sure it's been discussed at some point on the forum (Did a search on the forum, couldn't find anything, maybe I wasn't searching with the right terms). Just wanted to hear your thoughts on it. |

You're misunderstanding what DVD-Rom support means. It supports DVD-Rom in that it reads DVD-Rom discs. What it can do with what is on them depends on the content. If the DVD-Rom contains a video file in a supported format, for example, the PS3 will play it fine.
What you're trying to do is to run a Windows application on the PS3, which is clearly never going to work. |

![]() Now that I know that much, have you seen any Blu-ray movies that support some type of online functionality that works, or something like DVD-Rom? |

yeah, i'd recommend you read the requirements for those features a little more thoroughly. i'm pretty sure you'll find it asking for a windows or mac OS... because, as the above poster has commented, it's running a windows/mac program.

Yeah, it used to be more popular, but DVDs will sometimes have PC/Mac features that DVD-players (including the PS3) won't run. You are supposed to access those features by putting the DVD into the disc drive on your computer.

They may not do it as much any more, I just have noticed it more because of Netflix, and getting so many DVD's with the Rom features on them. Don't know why it didn't take off, I guess because they never utilized them to the fullest extent.
