Default Your Thoughts on import Steelbooks

I was just wondering what you guys think. I live in the USA, and have only bought steelbooks in stores. There are a few really nice looking steelbooks I've seen on ebay but aren't USA, most are Canada. For the people like me living in the USA, do you guys buy out of country steelbooks? One perfect example for me is "Gangs Of New York". I'd much rather have the steelbook than the regular BD in stores. Will they all deffinetly work in my Blu-ray player? I've never bought anything out of country so have no idea how the discs works and if the case looks different than US cases. If some of you guys can explain, I'd really appreciate it. Thank you so much!

I just got into the steelbook game myself. The example you have mentioned "Gangs of New York" can be found on amazon.ca along with some other really nice steelbooks. I have ordered steelbooks from amazon.ca, amazon.uk and amazon.de with good results except for one instance where one was damaged. The majority of my steelbooks that come from other countries I have purchased are form other forum members from the steelbook trading forum. There are many good members here that have extras from group buys or can assist you with
getting what you are looking for.

In regards to whether or not they will play in your player, you can do a search on this site to check the region coding of the disc to find out if it is region free or region A which will work in your U.S. player. Again, the one you have mentioned Gangs of New York is region A and B so you are good to go with this one. You can find many existing threads regarding some of the latest steelbooks that may have answers to some of your questions.

I hope this helps a little bit, good luck with your collection and welcome to the club.

Thank you very much for the kindness and quick feedback! I'm not worried about where I would buy them or the price (I don't mind buying on ebay, because I can ask the seller about the EXACT condition), It's more of the actual import idea. I've never seen one in person, and don't know if certain movies require certain blu ray players, and if the artwork on the back & disc is in a different language, ETC. I just don't know much about it. I was wondering if anyone can give me info on Out of USA steelbooks. If they are similar or different than US.

Default Of course I do.

Of course I order steelbooks from other countries. I live in the US as well, and we always get royally f#cked when it comes to steelbooks. If we get a steel in store, Canada gets it too. I'd love to see a US exclusive steel for a change.

The only time you will need a different blu ray player is if the region code is B or C, if it is region free or A you are good to go. In regards to the artwork on the actual case and disc itself, yes, depending on what country you get the steelbook from it will be in a different language. I have a couple of releases from Germany and the Netherlands and the back of the cases have in the respective languages. In regards to canada titles they will be in English but will also have some French text.

Hope this helps.

Do the canadian steelbooks look like any US steelbook would, except you have to get it In canada? Or do they look kind of different. Also, do the discs work in a PS3 or regular BD player? Also, can someone tell me where the futureshop steelbooks come from?

It will all depend on the release. Yes, they will work in a PS3 or regular BD player as long as it is region free or A. If you have a modified or region free player the region coding will not matter. FurtureShop steelbooks come from Canada and they only ship within Canada. I am not sure if that is the answer you are looking for.

Oh Okay. Most of the steelbooks I would get would probably be Canada (I looked at the master steelbook list and most I want are Canada). I'm guessing Canada steelbooks are usually Region A Or Region Free? And Can you guys give me info on the futureshop steelbooks?

Lol, you keep answering my questions after I hit send. Thanks so much for all you're help. I guess I will be good with the Futureshop and Canada steelbooks, you can always find them on ebay. I'm guessing the futureshop website doesn't ship to the USA?

For the record, the reason why I like the Canada steelbooks is because it doesn't sound like they are much different than US. I don't know if I would like different languaged stuff mixed in with my regular blu-rays. I don't wanna feel like I have a bootleg lol.

I am on vacation and I am just staying busying until midnight before I head out to find a copy of Resident Evil After Life steelbook at Walmart. You are correct, FutureShop doesn't ship to the U.S. but there are many members here that you may be able to find that can assist you with a steelbook in the steelbook trading forum. They may even have a copy on hand that they can sell or trade to you.

I can say the steelbooks I have that are in different languages are some of my nicest and favorite steelbooks. They by all means do not look like bootlegs at all. For example, my copy of Gladiator 10th Anniv Edition from the Netherlands is a beautiful looking steel. Some other really good looking ones are Clash of The Titans, The Dark Knight, Sherlock Holmes, Underworld Evolution and Zombieland to name a few.

I just got into the steelbook game about 2-3 months ago so what I have is just a tip of the mountain, there many, many other nice looking steels outside of the U.S. and Canada that you may like.

I started off with UK steelbooks, but I quickly found myself importing from other countries because of exclusive steels.

Such examples are:
Transformers (Germany)
Tropic Thunder (Germany)
Sherlock Holmes "Original steelbook" (Germany)
Avatar (Korea)
Iron Man 2 (Korea)

And i've got my first canadian steelbook in the post that should be here in the next couple of weeks (it's already taken a month), which is the FutureShop Transformers ROTF steelbook.

All that, and I am not hearing from any debt collectors yet. A steelbook life if the life for me...

i hate some imports. i hate when there logo's are printed on the front so i wont buy them. and i also dont like not being able to read the backs of them, i'd only buy english only books or nothing on the back at all. i cant even get myself to buy these bilingual spines from canada granted some of the covers and movies are sweet.

Now, I will agree with the ratings logo issue. I do all that I can to avoid those releases. The only one I have with a ratings logo is John Rambo which was worth it.

Don't get me wrong, I love steelbooks, but I don't know if I like them as much as some of you. I always look for a "Ultimate Collector's edition" or something like that first. Some of the hardcore steelbook collector's will go for Steelbook first. The only way I will buy a steelbook is if there is only a regular edition besides the SB. If there is a really special edition of the movie instead, I usually go with that. I like the unique packaged items because they seem more special to me. SB's are great though. Like I said, there are certain movies like Gangs of New York that only have a regular BD available in the US, so why not get a nice SB instead? I hope you guys get what I'm saying.

I am actually like you.

If I was a hardcore steelbook collector, I would get Inception SB in any case.
But instead, I choose the Brieafcase and skipped the steelbook because I thought it was cooler.

FYI, US SteelBooks usually come from the same place worldwide, Denmark.
USA and Canada usually share releases with very insignificant differences, sometimes they actually share the same disc. However, Gangs is Alliance in CA and BVHE in USA however they both use the remastered version. I dont think you will see much difference in US/Canada/UK/ and Australia since they are all English Speaking countries. Where the inconsistencies will occur in these countries are with the ratings labels, however its just cosmetic.
Of course, german Steels will have German writing on them and French will have the same.

You can buy any Canada disc and it will work
You can buy any Asian disc and it will work

From Australia/Europe you have to check the region coding

If DVD's are included in the package they will not work unless its Canadian.

For languages you need to check the packaging screenshots.

I would not advise using ebay. Use the trading forums here if you can.

Futureshop is based in Canada.

Good luck.
