Don't believe it?--Go ahead, name a major stage-musical movie made between 1983 and 2001. (And those Andrew Lloyd Webber "Cats" direct-DVD's don't count.)
The theory has contributed to science by also offering an explanation as to why people liked "Moulin Rouge" at the time.

On one of our Disney boards, every time we get a "ZOMG, HSM is teh kewlest!" post, we older-generation folk like to heckle them with "Oh, say, just found out there's this thing called 'Grease' you might want to rent!--I saw it on the shelf next to 'Fame' and 'West Side Story'! "
(And, yes, the responses tend to be, "OMG, Grease, we just saw that for the first time last week!")

YMMV whether Hairspray was "better" than HSM2, but fact is, it deserved to exist more than HSM2.

'Hairspray' SHOULD BE this generations 'Grease'!!! Instead, the 'High School Musical' phenomenon has stepped in the way and shoved flippant content into the pop culture where 'Hairspray' has more important things to say in a much more enjoyable way. 'Hairspray' is a thousand times better than HSM1, HSM2, and HSM3 combined. And PQ/AQ don't even come into play on this one for me.

Even the people here donot know about musicals at all. You want proof go look at the new this week thread were as of now 155 votes and only 4 for That Entertainment.

Cannot agree more with what has been said. But there are still a few of the younger generation out there that like true musicals.

i have'nt seen HSM2 or hairspray but i think all they have in common is they are both musicals

hairspray was written years and years while HSM2 is a newer production.

seems to me like your doing a apples/oranges thing here.

my two cents.

And why is that, exactly?

I would think it should be beyond dispute that the one essential ingredient in a good musical is good music. HMS2 has that; Hairspray doesn't.

I hadn't realized that the purpose of musicals was to say "important things."

Because Hairspray was made by people who had seen musicals before in their lives, and still passed the expectations of its peer audience--
I'm sure that if you went back in time to the 1800's and showed an episode of "Saved by the Bell" to Victorian audiences who had never seen pictures move before, it would be hailed as the technical marvel of the age.

(Oh, and because, unlike "Saved by the Bell", Hairspray was also released in theaters.)

Well, I have seen musicals before in my life, and I enjoyed HSM2 immensely more than Hairspray. I am old enough to have seen movie musicals such as South Pacific, The Music Man, Sound of Music, and My Fair Lady in theaters when they were first released. I particularly liked The Music Man; I believe I saw it about 12 times during its original release. More recently, I have become a great fan of Gene Kelly's movies, which, when I last checked, were musicals. I would think that people who claim to be such admirers of the movie musical genre would be happy to see titles like HSM1 and HSM2 creating an interest in the movie musical genre in a generation that otherwise would have absolutely none.

...Then WHAT, for the luva Mike, are you doing watching the Disney Channel???

(And don't say it's "because you like Disney", you know better than that, and we know.)

What makes you think I'm watching the Disney Channel? I ordered HSM2 on BD because it was on BD and because I had vaguely heard of the popularity of HSM1, so I thought I'd give it a try.

Oh, I think you can judge people on this!!!

PQ for both movies are spot on. You have to give HSM2 a slight edge for AQ. However anyone who thinks HSM2 is anything more than a very long video is NOT and I repeat NOT IN THERE RIGHT MINDS. The acting and story are just superficial. It's meant for the 5-16 year old range, they can't put anything real in it.

You can argue the PQ/AQ on the BD's but please don't compare the movie to Hairspray. The maturity levels of the two movies are not on the same plane.

and i am 17, problem is not many people would admit to liking hsm, frankly i dont really care, i think movies and music are two things you cant really judge people on.

100% in agreement. Great for kids to watch, but the message delivered is just worthless drivel.

Waters' Hairspray is the definitive title.

Once again, where is it written that movie musicals are supposed to have "important" messages?

Admitting you have a problem is the first step.
