Default Unsupported Video Format?

Hey all,

Sorry if this question has been asked, I did search. On my PS3, I have a couple locations on my computer (Lenovo laptop running Windows 7, 64-bit) recognized as media servers and the videos are showing up on my PS3. However, when I choose them on the XMB is says "Unsupported video format".

They are a mixture of avi and mov...could someone tell me what I am doing wrong or need to do correctly?

Thanks!

Those files aren't supported on the PS3. You'll need to convert them to another file format. You can google it and find some software for your needs.

.avi files are supported for playback but it depends on which codec was used to make that .avi file. Not every codec is supported. There are a lot of freeware converters that can handle this for you.

avi is a container which could have been encoded from hundreds of possible codecs, sadly the ps3 which does have its own rugged set of preinstalled codecs does not have them all, some of them can be made by hundreds of corporations to even smaller devs.

There are excellent video convertors out there through not all of them produce best results with each video format, in some cases there general or specific convertors that do a better job them mass format convertors.

Red Kawa makes a free ps3 video convertor called Video 9 it is a mass format convertor.

http://www.redkawa.com/videoconverters/ps3video9/

Beware though some of free stuff you mind find on google may not be clean software, so keep your wits about you, some media servers can actually do the conversions for you, like TVersity (http://tversity.com/) it has both a free and pro version.

Another pc application can also do this, but I will not speak its name here because while fully legit and good, it can sadly be twisted by those with evil hearts, through if you must know pm me then, through I discourage the use of this application.

So rock on, and I hope this post helps you out.

Preserve our blue and perfect world.

mkv - use mkv2vob

avi - Should play anyway. If it does not play use the above convertor.

If you don't want to convert you can media stream via ps3 media server. Which is located here -

http://code.google.com/p/ps3mediaserver/downloads/list

Choose the version you want. Go to the navigation panel, add your directories, restart.. you should be good to go.

Then you can media stream the file and convert on the fly by choosing the option to transcode (its an option on the PS3 in the video section).

I had trouble with tversity but was able to play all of my files easily with ps3mediaserver as mentioned earlier. I also used mkvtovob only a few times but it was easy to use.

The only reason I didn't mention mkvtovob was there was no specificed mkv files, but I would like to say mkvtovob is a very excellent program made by someone who really cares.

His forum is located here, you can also download the latest version here http://www.mkv2vob.com/ note it will not help you with your avis or .mov, to read the forum in its entirety you have to actually sign up, most topics are hidden till you do.

Excellent point Death, some convertors or media servers preference can really be up to the user, what they want to do with, how much time they want to spend on it, and generally there expectations for output.

Its really all up to what the player wants.

Oh and richieb1971, long time no see, not neccesarily while yes avi should work the multidue of codecs that can end with avi extension are countless even some that even require special codecs to decode, hell it could be moving jpeg which years ago would stump divx convertors.

You know what you made me think up another solution, if you download the divx player from http://www.divx.com play the media, on the right of the player is a bar that says convert to: and has picture of several devices click the ps3 a window will appear and then follow the directions it can mass convert media to dvd converted for ps3. Note based on how wierd the codec is will determine how much effort any convertor may need to convert your media to be ps3 ready.

On that note I wish you the best of luck.

Ok, I downloaded Video 9 and converted 2 different videos, left them in the same folder (accessible to the PS3) but renamed it. The new files are in the folder, however, neither of the new, converted videos showed up on the PS3.

Ugh, any idea what I am still doing wrong?

the ps3 is peculiar to say the least when it comes to its file support. A lot of issues seem to be audio related (I've even some dvds where it can't play audio on the extras).
i have an Mpeg1 video that it couldn't even find on disc or usb stick, but had no problem finding it over the home network, from where it'd play it without problem...

that only applies if they're on a USB outside of the 'video' folder.

I had a situation recently where the icons on windows were showing as the film/music note. If I put the those files on a USB drive and put that USB drive on the PS3 the files did not show up. It did not matter if I pressed triangle, X or whatever, they did not show up.

Since they were downloaded files I downloaded them again. This time the icons displayed like a screenshot of frame 100 of the movie file and the PS3 could see it.

So from that experience what did I do with those files that made them go from a screenshot icon to a film/music note icon?

I know that I used PS3mediaserver to copy some of the files onto the pS3, then used the PS3 to copy them to USB. But thats just a guess, but somewhere along the line something happened to the files which made hide on the PS3. So from now on I won't be bothering copying from the PS3, only to it. See if that fixes my problem.
