Anyone that has seen both the DVD and BD versions of DR on a decent size screen (46 inches or more) please let me know if there's an adequate improvement in picture quality in the HD version. I know the movie was shot in 16mm and will not be an HD showcase, but is an upgrade warranted?

The screenshots are on this website. Super 16mm has a vertical resolution of around 1500 lines, and the digital intermediate format is 2K, so technically speaking there is no reason for the BD to not be better than the DVD. The screenshots look quite good to me also.

Is there a version with lossless audio? From what I understand the UK version by Momentum has only a DD 5.1, since it also crams the film and 2.5 hr making of onto a single BD25.

Pretty sure the German release from Sunfilm is AVC/DTS-HD lossless, though not owning the disc I can't be 100% positive. Region "B" only, though, and all of the extras are on a separate PAL DVD (or not included at all, if you go for the 1-disc version).

Here's a (cropped) COMPARISON between the Lionsgate Blu-ray and DVD. Even with some compression foul-ups, I think it's a pretty dramatic improvement.

^Thanks for that above link. I trust Mike Mackenzie's impressions. I have the 2-DVD SE version right now and I was idly wondering about upgrading...has anyone got the German BD and can tell me if the transfer and audio are alright?

I have never seen the DVD but I own the BD.. While it is a very, very gritty movie (kinda like Texas Chainsaw Massacre) it looks quite good! I like the look of the movie and I'd say its definitely worth it..

Since when is DTS HD MA lossy? Is it just a super low bitrate, or en error in the post? Big improvement over the dvd (US version) quality-wise, but missing a bunch of extras. Worth an upgrade and save (save/keep the dvd for features that is).

When it's not on the disc in question, that's when.

Just in case you're not joking:

No Photoshop tricks, although I had to pause to get the title screenshot. I let it play for a few minutes and the bitrate on the DTS audio was 3.0MBS (not shown on pause), not lossy in my understanding. The 5.1 track is 640kbs, and the commentaries are 192k FWIW.

If redxrebellion meant the UK has lossy audio, that looks to be right from what I see on the back cover on this site. All the missing features are listed, but only DD 5.1 audio.

No, I wasn't joking.

Hi Res audio isn't lossless.

From this very site:
Quote:
DTS-HD HIGH RESOLUTION AUDIO (DTS-HD HR)
Similar to Dolby Digital Plus, DTS-HD High Resolution is an improved version of the previous DTS Digital formats. It is a lossy format that delivers up to 7.1 channels of sound with sampling frequencies from 48kHZ up to 96 kHz and 24 bit depth resolution. It runs between 1.5Mbps to 6Mbps. Note that DTS-HD HR is sometimes referred to as DTS-HD, which is misleading. Its quality is between DTS-HD Master Audio and the older DTS Digital 5.1 and DTS-ES.

This format is optional for Blu-Ray (up to a constant bit rate of 6Mbps) and HD DVD (up to a constant bit rate of 3Mbps) players. It is an alternative for DTS-HD Master Audio where disc space may not allow it. However, most studios prefer to use basic DTS Digital or Dolby Digital.

From this very site:
Doh, and thanks for the info. Plus it was mislabeled on dvdprofiler and when I see DTS, I almost assume Master Audio will follow. Still, DTS HR is better than DD 5.1

So DTS is only lossless when it's master audio then right?

Correct. Like the quote above says, the wording is quite misleading.

Fcuking Lionsgate. Check your discs people if it's been awhile since you've watched anything from Lionsgate. This already happened before with "American Psycho" and now it has happened with my "Devil's Rejects" disc. The disc went bad apparently. Saw the "commentaries are views of the company" screen then nothing, just black screen. God damn.

EDIT - Tried it one more time, it skipped the Lionsgate logo on it's own just as it starts (which didn't even show up the first time) and is now froze on the screen about commentaries.
