United Kingdom Why do Uk SteelBooks have rating logos?

I've noticed a lot of UK steelbooks don't have a ratings certificate on them. I know the packaging does when you buy them. Why the hell do they have to be slapped over regular keep-cases three times?

Because the BBFC says so.

the steelbooks which do not have rating logos are often not exclusive to that particular country, so they use a card slip to add the ratings logo....sony steelbooks are a classic example

Even worse are when you have the irish ratings as well as the english ones. A double whammy.

Yes, I can remember when that first happened. I know ratings always harm the artwork but it was okay (I guess) before. The Irish ones are even more ugly, so having to have both those AND the others is a damn shame. It wouldn't be so bad if more companies allowed you to remove them.

The StudioCanal Collection releases get away with displaying the certificates on the seal and the removable sheet of paper, so they don't have to be applied directly to the tin. I believe this was the case for the Terminator 2 UK Steelbook.

Yeah, most of the time it comes down to companies not being inventive enough to think of ways of getting around printing them directly onto the package (if its a steelbook or digibook).

I'm generally alright with it though, I've grown up with them and like knowing the ratings of things here in the UK. I actually think the BBFC ratings logos are the nicest and most inconspicuous ratings logos I've seen from any country, but the Irish ones are hideous and it's unfortunate that they have to be put there as well.

I guess I also see it as part of the price to pay of having a largely decent and transparent ratings system (nowadays at least)... The US ratings system may not harm the design of packaging but it harms the film industry, I'll take a couple of logos from the BBFC over the practices of the MPAA any day.

Yes. But it's also the law in Germany and they have bigger and uglier ones, and the studios have been creative in getting around them ruining the artwork with removable stickers on steelbooks and reversible artwork on standard cases. Why can't they be as creative in the UK?

The rating logos are only really there to stop underage people from buying certain products in-store (IE a 14 year old, trying to buy a 18 rated DVD, which happened today at work ), but even that doesn't work half the time as most sellers don't bother checking for ID.

I've never sold a product below the required age if there was one, but I know people who have. Most of the time its a £5000 fine or 6 months in prison for suppling a minor.

All that means squat with online purchasing though. We kinda need a new age restriction system in place.

To buy online you need to be 18 with a credit/debit card. The online versions should have no markings.

If CEX or someone buys it, they can put their own on it if they want.

I remember at my school I brought Robocop in to watch after we did our exams we had no lessons to speak of so they wheeled out the TV and VCR.

About 3 years after I left some teacher got booted out for letting a kid put on Robocop on the schools TV. UK is pretty serious about such things.

No you don't, I had a Solo debit card from age 11 and it worked on Amazon, not to mention LoveFilm which opened up a whole world of 18s for me (albeit I was more like 16 then)

But the ratings aren't just about stopping people from buying things they aren't old enough to get, they're about informing people in a clear way - not just parents but the people watching the films themselves. I'm not the only person I know who semi-secretly self-censored some of their movie viewing choices when they were younger because they knew it was an 18 and what kind of stuff it'd have in it that you wouldn't want to see.

If your right, its no wonder the banks screwed up. Back when I was 11 I couldn't get pocket money let alone a credit card..

Haha, it's only a debit card for some sort of 'young person's account', with no overdraft or ability to borrow, so it's not like it puts young people into any debt at all. It just means they grab customers when they're young who they're hoping can't be bothered to change banks when they hit 18 and then CAN get overdrafts, credit cards, and other assorted debts

Yep, that's not correct. They don't even check, nor do eBay (or rather Paypal). The only company I know of that does is Play.com, where you have to enter your date of birth I believe, and it will tell you to remove the items from your basket if you're not old enough.
