Default New to The Forum.

Hey whats up folks,Im new to the boards and new to the BluRay format.
I just purchased the Sony BDP-S1 the other night after months of research and even though im not happy about the price I paid I know this format is gonna win in the end.The salesman actually tried to convince me that HD DVD was the way to go but after the fact that HD DVD doesnt support existing DVD and more studios are going with BluRay its safe to say HD DVD is this generations BETAMAX.
Thats actually the main reason I went with BluRay,it upgrades my existing DVDs to almost HD quality.
Thats the reason most people ive talked to are going with BluRay,it supports everyones Big DvD collections right now.I mean I have 1,400 DvDs and id be so pissed if those went the way of the dodo.

Hello and welcome to the forum! If I'm not mistaken, HD-DVD also supports your pre-existing DVDs, and up-converts them as well. There are quite a few other reasons to go Blu, and you'll find them all over the forum. Have you checked your firmware yet on your BDP-S1? You have to upgrade it to play movies like Descent. Again, welcome to the forum.

Hi and welcome!

Like Kierre says, HD-DVD also supports DVD, however, there is no question that Blu-ray is the better format of the two and that Blu-ray has an overwhelming support advantage both in terms of consumer electronics companies as well as movie studios, so you should be safe

Welcome.
Ever heard of the VHS Dodo? DVD will eventually go the same way, but not for many years to come. However with a DVD collection that size, I can only assume you really enjoy watching movies. With a HD TV / projector of the larger sizes you are about to enjoy movies even more, much more. If you are planning on getting a large HD collection (even if you aren't at the moment you will) there is much more potential for a large collection in Blu-ray than HD-DVD as Universal, Paramount & Warner (HD-DVD) vs Sony (Columbia Tristar, Sony Pictures etc) MGM, Fox, Disney (and group), Warner and Paramount.
I think all HD-DVD players can play DVD - not that I'm for a moment suggesting that you made the wrong decision.

Everybody has to start somewhere, and you have made a great decision with Blu-ray, the rightful heir to DVD.

Hello all. I'm new as well. I didn't want to create another thread just to say hi. I'm sure the mods have enough threads to deal with. Don't let the name fool you, I have a PS3 and I love it.

Yeah im a huge SW fan and equally just a huge fan of movies.
I watch movies literally everyday and im enjoying the hell out of my bluray movies. But im still a firm believer that regular dvd is a great format and people shouldnt be to quick to say its a dead format, too many people here are doing that, but im sure in another 10 years theres gonna be yet another format thats gonna come along and HD dvd will be whats old...and i wont be to quick to say that formats dead either, because really its all good to me.

Welcome Xboxbydegrees,BluFive and anyone else new here.

Blufive is right, the worst you'll meet is someone who went to another forum, got angry at the half-truths/editorializing and then came back here. The cool down period is 2 minutes or one post whichever comes first.
