I watched this last night on my ten foot projection system. Wow! This is a great bluray. It may not have been quite as sharp as some silents, but the grayscale was absolutely perfect. Not washed out like Steamboat Bill Jr. Best of all was the music score. It was perfect, matching all the moods and accenting the main actions. This is one of the most enjoyable presentations of silent film that I've ever seen.

Has anyone seen some early reviews of the Remastered edition ?
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Our-H...lu-ray/249264/ Putney: Yes the previous Kino version was region-free. Don't know about the new one though. |

These are things I believe are true, but I'm not a Keaton obsessive, so hopefully somebody will correct me if I'm wrong.
- The Kino masters are old and only 2K - The Cohen masters are newer and are 4K, so they are assumed to be better PQ than Kino. These are also the masters used for the UK "Masters of Cinema" releases. - Kino's standalone release of "Steamboat Bill Jr" has an exclusive alternate cut - "Three Ages" has two different cuts spread out over the two different Kino releases. The American cut is 1080i, on a double feature disc with "Sherlock Jr". The European cut is 1080p, in a two-pack release with "The General". - for the shorts, the five disc is more complete All of the releases have different bonus features, you should use dvdcompare to see if any of the alternates interest you. I think there's also different scores, but I'm not sure what has what. EDIT: Credit to Egbert for correcting me about the UK releases. Last edited by thatguamguy; 10-10-2019 at 08:51 PM. |

The Masters of Cinema set with The General, Steamboat Bill Jr, and Sherlock Jr. uses the exact same 4K restorations and scores as the US Cohen releases.
Kino initially put out their own versions of all the Keaton silents, but when they lost the rights to the Cohen library, they replaced the four fully public domain features with double features using Lobster Films 2K restorations (The General/Three Ages and College/Steamboat Bill Jr). They also replaced their shorts collection with only the Keaton solo films with the Lobster 2K restorations of all the Arbuckle shorts added. That set is mostly identical to the MoC box set except MoC added a substantial booklet. Since then, Our Hospitality has fallen into the public domain, which is why Lobster Films was able to do a 2K restoration. Cohen seems to have an exclusive on the Carl Davis scores (other than what's come out from Criterion). Only problems I've seen are some errors on title cards on the Keaton shorts, variances in image quality (Hard Luck is significantly better, but Cops looks worse), and of course score differences. |
