Default Online Gaming

Does anyone know what is good download/upload speeds and ping are necessary for online game.

Reason I'm asking is that I started playing MP on bioshock 2 and I get disconnected half the time.

Download Speed: approx. 1 Mbps
Upload Speed: approx half of download

Ping: 99ms

Are you using a wireless network? Most people that complain about poor online connections are using wireless, and it is almost always at fault.

Where I live, the apartment's wireless network wont allow my ps3 (or any game console for that matter) to connect directly. I have to connect my ps3 to my pc via ethernet cable and then it goes out to the router.

I have highspeed internet and use a wireless router...my ps3 and laptop share it and i have never had any issues. If your going to be into online gaming i suggest highspeed internet like cable and a wireless router make sure it has a lock on it so other ppl in your area dont tap in. You should be good to go with that. I live in a house so if your in a apartment i dunno how that all works.

This.

Always better to be connect with a ethernet cable then Wi Fi for online gaming.

Also are you behind a firewall?

In order for my ps3 to connect to the apartments network it has to go through my pc (which has one of the usb wireless things to connect to the router). So my pc firewall is turned on but I found no difference in download speed when it was either turned on or off.

I'm guessing because I have to pass through my pc to even connect thats the reason I'm getting slow speed (and its a cruddy network).

So until they update their rounters/network and actually allow my ps3 to connect to the router directly then I guess won't be able to do online gaming. At least I can update my trophy profile.

That's actually extra bad. If your PC is connected wirelessly AND you're using a wired bridge AND you have a software firewall turned on, that's 3 places that a packet can get delayed and/or corrupted.

Yeah this makes sense. Thanks for help Icemage (and everyone else too).

Looks like I can't do much about it beside turning off the firewall which I'm uncomfortable doing.

Why can't you just get your own modem from the cable company?

Yeah I've never heard of such a thing , I'd guess come these 4g speeds you could tether it with a cellphone and get better results.

I'm getting 1-2mbps and 400-700kbps with my old 3g droid1.

I actually have a guy on my friends list, that I know personally in real life that does that. He runs a laptop and the ps3 off his phone and no lag is noticeable when I play with him.

set your ps3 to a static IP address (ex: 192.168.1.65 or whatever, some high # between 50-99 at the end)

set your router to be in a DMZ zone for the static ip address you listed on your ps3.

this now means no firewall or any restrictions on that static ip address.
your laptop, pc, etc wont ever use the dmz # as it is assigned to the ps3.
when a wireless or reg connection happen they start @ 192.168.1.1 then work their way up the # range as more things are connected......hence start the dmz/static ip around 50

Don't think that is allowed at the apartment complex where I live but I will check that out.

I mean I've never tested it, but to have a phone high speed internet all in one would be pretty awesome although if they cap the 4g speeds then you could run into some issues with that
