This is one I added to the Criterion Wish List thread here. I would place TYOLD and Gallipoli as two of my most wanted blu-rays. I wish Criterion would release more Australian New Wave cinema, but right now I'd just take a superb transfer since so many Australian movies from the mid 80s to 90s are on poor quality DVD only.

Looking forward to retiring my DVD of this. Of the DVD's that I own which have received a Blu-ray release I still have 758 to upgrade, 101 of them I'd have to import which includes this title. Looks like it can be had on Amazon.co.uk shipped for $44.20 at the moment. Here's to hoping this gets a U.S. release. If I do import the title I'll make sure to report back.

Yeah, I've been supporting a blu for this movie since I first starting posting on this forum. I never splurged for the DVD as I'd read about the disappointing transfer, though I still have my 90's laserdisc. Criterion, Warner Archive, somebody release this!
I'd also like to see a release of the 1984 Mel Gibson/Diane Keaton romantic drama Mrs.Soffel. |

Yeah, I dug a little deeper on this import. The review here didn't scare me off quite honestly. Don't care if it's on BD-R and not being better than the DVD could mean many things. I'd be watching this at 158" diagonal. True 1080p makes a huge difference at larger screen sizes over native/upconverted 480p. That being said, reviews on Amazon reveal a major deal breaker. Evidently the opening credits are in the OAR, 2.35:1. The rest is in 1.85:1.

Yes, would definitely like to see TYOLD on Blu. Excellent & depressing historical drama. Gibson & Weaver were superb in this, and Linda Hunt was truly sublime playing the male dwarf Billy Kwan - her Academy Award (for best supporting actress) was well deserved here.

One of my all-time favorite films along with other Peter Weir classics. So desperate for a Blu Ray of this film I even sent Twilight Time a message asking if they would consider putting this title out.
TCM/Warner Archive’s on-demand DVD of this for $14.99 is just tragic and shows their lack of interest in the title. Sometimes I fantasize of becoming a big director so I would have enough clout to rescue some of these films from obscurity, similar to Quentin Tarantino’s short lived Rolling Thunder Pictures. One can dream. In the meantime, I’ll continue to lobby for a proper release of this film to anybody who’ll listen, ha! Meanwhile tiny cultish films like “The Man Who Killed Hitler and then The Bigfoot” get a blu ray release. Not knocking that film as I haven’t seen it. Just illustrating the absurdity of it all. It was streaming on the now defunct Filmstruck last fall. I watched it online several times, for the pure joy of it, and in the hopes that multiple viewing might send someone some metrics that it was still popular. Maybe I was the only one who actually watched it. I’m worried it will only be available on Warner’s new streaming channel while the physical copy slowly fades from existence.
