Default Should I upgrade my reciever to a hd reciever?

MY SETUP

front: Polk RTi10
center: polk CSi5
Surround: Polk FXi5
Sub: Velodyne DLS 400R
receiver: Denon 2807
blu ray: ps3

How do you convert DD HD and DTS HD to LPCM? Does anyone know if my reciever is capable of doing this? If I can than I probably wont upgrade. How do the HD formats compare to LPCM, because I never heard them. Another reason I want to upgrade is because I heard that the Polk Rti10 speakers are power hungry, so instead of 110W per chan. I will be getting 130W.

The Denon 2807 will not decode True HD or DTS HD MA, nor will it accept them as bitstream from the player. You'll need the 2808 (or better) or another HDMI 1.3 receiver (Onkyo/Pio etc) to do this.

There is no difference between 110 and 130.

Ok, because you have a PS3...there is NO need to upgrade the receiver...the PS3 can only send out lossless audio via LPCM....so a new receiver will nto benefit you unless you just want a new one.

The PS3 can decode dolby truHD and send via Linear PCM...it does not decode Dts-HD MA yet, hopefully soon.

But again, since you have a PS3 there is no real benefit upgrading. (what you have is plenty...enjoy it)

Ditto. The 2807 is fine and will accept multi channel PCM from your PS3. A new receiver is not needed.

How is the ps3 connected to said receiver? If it is connected by optical cables it is only sending lpcm for 2 channels.

If you double the wattage, you would get an increase of 3 decibels. So if you increased the watts from 100 to 130, you would get less than a 1 decibel increase. You wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

Also - your Polks are not power hungry, they are actually average (sensitivity 89 dB). However, if you were to get new speakers that had a 92dB rating, the result would be the same as upgrading to a 200w receiver. For instance, Klipsch are known for their very high sensitivity ratings - usually in the upper 90s.

What he is saying is that you won't hear a difference between the two in use as the wattage ratio is insignificant.

However, the 130w receiver may have a higher quality amp.

If you hook up your PS3 using HDMI cables to your receiver and set the PS3 to output PCM, it will send Multi Channel PCM to your receiver and therefore you will get "HD" sound.

The PS3 "decodes" the HD formats (but not Dts-HD Master...yet)

Then the audio is automatically sent to the Receiver in Linear PCM format.

I dont quite understand. If I am watching a blu ray movie and it doesnt support PCM 5.1 but does support Dolby True HD 5.1 it will convert Dolby HD to PCM 5.1? If so am I supposed to choose Dolby HD?

Yes, the PS3 supports the conversion of TrueHD into PCM. As long as you have the PS3's output set to PCM you should be good to go.
