Default Static Electricity sucks

Walked into my house today and picked up my harmony one, zap and the hard buttons are now dead! So what to get now? The Harmony 900 or a URC?

Try hooking it back up to the computer and see if that helps them.

You can do the following to reduce damage from static energy:
  1. Increase the humidity in your room, particularly in Winter months. Buy a humidifier.
  2. Take your shoes off before you enter your room and touch the metallic handle of the door to discharge energy.
  3. Use anti static spray on the carpet.

You're just going to write-off a $250+ remote like that? I'd call Logitech and see if they can do anything for you.

I never knew they made stuff like that I will be getting some for sure, I am like a lighting bolt in the winter months. I just added a humidifier to the garage because of this.

Definitely +1.

Along the subject of humidity. I humidify my home in winter. Did it originally to prevent dry skin, but also to keep those annoying static shocks under control. Up here in the Northeast, dry interior air in wintertime is extreme.

I picked up a cheap one for $12 on closeout at Target, we got it for our son but he sleeps better without it so I have repurposed it

Get an aquarium, it's a great alternative to a humidifier and looks a lot better...

And depending on the type requires lots of light, no thanks

My furnace has a humidifier attached to it, so there is a little panel by the furnace controls to set the humidity. Great "whole-house" solution.

Go to Logitech website, and tell them your buttons are not working (not necessarily telling them why) they will trouble shoot with you and eventually send you a replacement.

I already have an whole house humidifier installed on my unit. It helped but this bitter cold we are experiencing right now was meaner than I thought. I'll try some of that anti-static spray though.

I didn't think Logitech would do anything about it. I'll give them a call this morning. So if they don't do anything about it I found the 900 on Newegg for a decent price and free shipping. Any other remote suggestions?

Yup, static electricity and integrated circuits don't mix well at all. The microscopic junctions of the transistors in the IC get completely fried by the thousands of volts that are present in static electricity. Those shiny plastic bags that you see circuit boards packaged in are anti-static bags. At one of my previous employers, we had to be wired to earth ground by our wrists at all times.

You can also try touching any grounded surface while handling your static-sensitive stuff (metal lamp base) or get a static-strap and plug it into the ground prong on your wall outlet, but how practical this is I don't know

I should have added this to my post #3 as another way of controlling static electricity.

Wear natural fiber clothing (pants, shirts, socks) made out of cotton instead of polyester. Get rid of all your John Travolta disco shirts and don't watch Saturday Night Fever in winter.

Your killing me, I was all set to head out in my best Rhinestone suit too!

I've decided on the iRule remote app for my iPhones and iPad. Looks like the perfect setup and we have 2 iPhones and 2 iPads. So this should work great!
I've been playing around with the software and my Integra is ethernet controlled and TV is serial port controlled both with 2way communication. I'm gonna love this app!
