Default Don't count on it...

Not bloody likely. They thought the same of DVD, and it went no where. <insert flushing toilet sound> Music comes in two usable forms these days. CD and mp3. Other formats are not as significant. Even CD's will one day fade as people will opt to d/l all their music.

Which brings me to this point...the craze among teen and young college people is, "I want ALL my music to fit on ONE mp3 player." Ever hear the expression, "Never put all your eggs in one basket." If you don't understand what that means, then you will learn one day.

So now they can be totally disconnected from the world as the only voices they hear must come over ear buds. MP3 players and cell phones, video games, black berries, PDA's and even mini-dvd players. It seems the most interesting voice we want to hear, is not of the people we are around, but someone else.

When I worked retail, they really had pressure to sell to the customer. I often got chewed out for not offering stuff on checkout. Know why I couldn't? They were on their frikken cell phone!

I'm giving a free t-shirt to people like that. "I live in my own little world. But it's ok, they all know me here."

Perhaps I can give a bit of a more positive answer... :P

In my opinion, it may. Most people download music, but they still need somewhere to put it. Some play it form their computer, some put it on MP3 players, and some burn their music to optical discs. Just like some people may choose to put music on DVDs instead of CDs for more space (more music per disc), some people may switch to blu-ray for burning their music. But this isn't likely to happen until portable music disc players support blu-ray. ...infact, do any even support DVDs yet?

Default Can anyone tell me this?

I was wondering if anyone could tell me if Blu-Ray dvds will be able to play both audio and film on one side?

Default I bet they would if the following happened.

I bet that Blu-Ray d.v.d.s would replace c.d.s if they were able to do play both formats audio wise of both Blu-Ray audio d.v.d.s and c.d.s

I think I need to clarify my question which was will the recording companies release their releases on blu ray disc, thus making a good old cd player obsolete. I am thinking about it since cd never quite achieved the pure sound of vinyl mainly because of bandwidth and storage limitations and apparently blu ray would solve those problems. Record companies would probably endorse it for bandwidth reasons as well as copyright issues.

I would suggest that the future of music is in downloadable content rather than new media. Especially as BB connections increase in speed. Some companies are already offering 1MByte connections for just £18 pm, with 2/3 MB connections either here or on the way. Music can then be stored on a central HDD with perhaps wireless streaming to any room in house. Plus portable devices like i-pod seem to be the future for portable music rathar than removable media like cd or dvd. Ultimately it would make sense to download all digital media. Perhaps even magazines, books etc?

Default That's all nice and stuff but...

That's all nice and stuff in terms of downloadable stuff but nothing for me or for the consumer market in my opinion will replace having music in a TANGIBLE form where you have some sort of confirmation as to what you not only are getting but will continue to have in the sense that it won't get erased or lost on some electronic equipment. I honestly believe that audiophiles such as myselft will never give up their records and c.d.s in the long run.

well I don't see that as a solution unless bandwidth connections go exponentially higher. I have a 5mb cable connection and I don't think it will be anytime soon enough to download hd movies or music. Granted there are sites available now to sell music but it's mostly around 192kbps which is much lower bandwidth of 1.5mbps of a cd. Not to mention copyright issues or lack of any accompanying material such as art, lyrics etc. Having said all that I don't see downloading to become anything but a niche market for a long time and I also don't see why blu ray wouldn't replace cd's as we know them today.

As much as I like my hires SACDs, I'm confident CD will remain the dominant form of home audio for many years to come. It's clear that MP3, not DVD-Audio, SACD, nor Blu-ray or HD-DVD, stands the best chance of displacing CD as the preferred home audio format.

Why if DVD Audio can provide the tracks in 5.1 Surround Sound will it not have a chance to survive? How else will you get the option of 5.1 Surround Sound? That is what I am asking. If not on Blu-Ray discs then how? I for one don't care about MP3's. I need the disc of whatever and the packaging. Frankly I don't really consider people who deal with just MP3s as real music fans anyway.

DVD-Audio sales are minimal. The fact is that very few people have an interest in multi-channel music. I don't hold MP3 fans in very high regard either but that's where music seems headed. I don't think Blu-ray will be an audio only format since Sony already has SACD. Another multi-channel format with minimal consumer interest.

Default Well what about...

Well do you think that they will come up with a format that will include both c.d. and whatever else can do the music or whatever the tracks are in 5.1 Surround Sound? Besides I know at the moment maybe those other audio dvds are not doing so well now I (not knowing much of what I am talking about) feel that there would be more interest in this if the public feel it will be the same format as the movies they are buying so all of this will play on the same equipment.

Yeah, a standard for music and video from the beginnig would be great ! It would fix the problem of changing DVD player, remember :
- LD player that can read DVD (1997)
- DVD player that can read CDA
- DVD player that can read CDA and VCD
- DVD player that can read CDA, VCD and SVCD
- DVD player that can read CDA, VCD, SVCD and MP3 !!!
- DVD player that can read CDA, VCD, SVCD, MP3 and WMA
- DVD player that can read CDA, VCD, SVCD, MP3, WMA and OGG
- DVD player that can read CDA, VCD, SVCD, MP3, WMA, OGG, DivX and all kind of -/+R
- DVD player that can read CDA, VCD, SVCD, MP3, WMA, OGG, DivX, +/-R and DVD-A
- DVD player that can read CDA, VCD, SVCD, MP3, WMA, OGG, DivX, +/-R, DVD-A and SACD

And why not ?
- DVD player that can read CDA, VCD, SVCD, MP3, WMA, OGG, DivX, +/-R, DVD-A, SACD and AAC !!!!
