Default Media Sharing Issue?

Hi, today I decided to get the most out of the media side of my PS3, by setting up Media Sharing. Unfortunately, on my computer, under the device list, I can't find the PS3, or any unknowns. Can anyone help me here? The details are:
  • My PS3, original 'phat' 60gb
  • My laptop, working on Windows 7
  • Windows Media Player, fully updated to the latest version
  • All the options on both the laptop and the PS3 are set up to what I believe is correct

Extra info:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LC8A_...eature=related I've followed this tutorial video perfectly, but when it comes to the list that this guy is on at 2:30, I have all of the options this guy has, except my laptop appears to be on it twice. When I was trying to locate the PS3, both it and the laptop were on. I've tried pausing my Kaspersky Internet Security software, and then searching, but still nothing. So any advice is welcome...

No helpful advice here.

I used to have media sharing turned on but it caused so many compatibility issues, especially frequent PSN signouts, that I finally got so fed up and just disabled it. If it requires you to manually open ports, something I don't trust myself doing, then it's just not worth it to me. As with wireless routers, I got to the point of saying, "This is way harder than it should be" and just chucked it.

If I could get around the major problem of not being able to find the PS3, I would of thought it to be easy to set up. I haven't heard about the problems it comes with though

I just open Windows Media Player, set the stream option to "Automatically allow my devices to play my media...", am good to go.

Are you trying to get the PS3 to see the media on your PC or the other way around (which I don't think is possible). If it's the first then I suggest either using "PS3 Media Server" or "TVersity" which will make the entire thing much MUCH easier to setup and requires no interface with Windows Media Player

Had the same problems as you did till I downloaded a little app called PS3 Media Server. Works wonders ... give it a go.

I'm doing the former. I've been constantly trying and trying, but still, there is no sign of the PS3 even existing on the PC. Would that not alter the chance of TVersity or Media Server working. If not, I'd definitely be willing to give these a try, but I'd much prefer to work it through Media Player

I cant watch the video but I assume that you have “Enabled Media Server” on the PS3 in the System menu before having the PC look for devices?

I hadn't enabled it, but upon checking, it appears to have been enabled anyway, maybe by default. Shame, as soon as you mentioned it I was hoping it was going to be one of those things so simple you feel stupid. By the way, loving the Talladega Nights quote on the signature, classic line. To those that suggested, downloading the Playstation Media Server thing now. Will get back ASAP on progress.

I've got the Playstation Media Server working, which means there's nothing wrong with the settings, so is there anyway that I might be able to use this to just use the Windows Media Player sharing, as I would much prefer that than this extra program..

If you got it working, you should be able to go to WMP11 and tell it to share whatever Music, Pictures etc that you want. Then go to the PS3 Music icon, tell it to find media servers. It should find yours. Do the same for the Music and Video.

The nice thing about the extra program, which has very little overhead when not transcoding, is that it can transcode on the fly almost anything that may NOT be PS3 ready. In my experience the WMP uses more resources than the PS3-MS for simple sharing.

Also this may help with the Windows Media Player issues, I'm sure you have done all of these step but figured I would post it just in case:

I told Windows Media Player to pretty much share everything. When I searched for media servers, it found one, but since nothing new came up, I presume it's the Playstation Media Server thing, and not Windows Media Player.

Thanks for the link, but still no luck in the PS3 or Windows Media Player finding each other

It has been years since i set mine up but i think that you have to have UPNP (universal plug and play) enabled on the PS3 as well. dont know if that is default or not.

Just enabled UPNP in the Internet Connection Advanced Settings, it still isn't appearing on my computers list of devices, and when I search for media servers on the PS3, it's still only finding that software. In other words, nothing changed

Ok, so the problem has developed. Today, my PS3 magically appeared in my device list, but, even after I said allow, the PS3 fails to find the media server that is Windows Media Player. Is there anything I need to do in Windows Media Player to set it up for sharing, other than clicking the options that allow it to?

You just have to select the Files/Folders on your PC that you want to share. I think mine had everything pre-selected.

It will share the default "shared" folders by default, lol. Anything else he will have to add on his own to the library.

This is why I gave up with Windows in general. I did the same thing as MrFattBill and grabbed Playstation Media Server. When there's free programs out there that are easier to set up and do more than what Window's own programs are capable of, then that's good enough for me. I prefer other options besides those that come with Windows anyways. And as MrFattBill had said, PMS has the ability to transcode on the fly and gives a lot more options to play the various kinds of video/audio formats out there that Windows Media Player may decide to balk at.

But I found this on Playstation Community Forums, maybe it will help you a bit more:
