Ok experts...need help.
I have the new Samsung 1080p (FULL HD) TV. Using a Pioneer Elite Receiver. When hooking the PS3 (HDMI) to the receiver, it doesnt recognize 1080P, however when I hook it directly to the TV it recognizes 1080P. So if I want 1080P, I have to sacrifice HDMI audio and go with the Digital Optical hook up because Im sending the signal with HDMI straight to the TV. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() What is up? I loved the audio with the HDMI, however I want to make sure the PS3 gets 1080P also. HELP |

I think you would be better off hooking the optical out from the Player directly to the reciever, That way, the TV does not have to take the electrical signal from the HDMI and convert to optical... IMHO the less "processing" of the signal the better.

I appreciate the education.
Was confusing the hell out of me. The Pioneer Elite was $1500...ouch.... shame I bought old technology. but so goes the life of early adopters |

If your Samsung is 42/46" and lower, I'd suggest you use HDMI as your audio delivery and use component as video, even at 1080i. You're not going to get a significant boost from 1080p if that's the size of your TV but you can't get LPCM or TrueHD using optical.

Can you tell any difference going through optical instead of HDMI?
I used an optical and switched to bitstream on the PS3. I now have 5.1 sound. If believe that if I add two more speakers (7.1) then I will need the HDMI. Check your receiver manual to see if there us a setting to bypass upscaling (downscale in your case) the picture. I think mine has that but have not tried HDMI as of yet. G/L... |

From Pioneer's website: "HDMI connection may not allow transmission of copyright protected material depending on the capability of the signal source." It doesn't sound like 1080p is in your cards.
I'll revise my earlier suggestion. Set the PS3 to 1080i. Then you'd get 1080i, PCM and all that. fuad Last edited by WriteSimply; 01-19-2007 at 04:31 PM. Reason: Omit "not" |

I have 3.1 (center and left/right with a sub). Pioneer Elite receiver Samsung 40in 1080p PS3 What is the suggest for overall best video/audio. Im thinking hdmi for audio not due to 7.1 but the audio quality per channel from pcm ????? |

WTF?
Let me get this straight, you only have 3.1 sound, and you are actually considering sacrificing picture quality because you believe that HDMI gives you better PCM sound than Optical??? Not meaning to be rude here... but.... - unsubscribing |

new to this bro.
was thinking that my def techs would sound better through pcm from what I read on these posts seeing that my receiver doesnt recognize 1080p..... best of both worlds? right? and also, I heard that 1080i and 1080p is not a big difference on a 40in iceman? |

Do what sounds best to you. I don't think it makes a lot of difference in the first place.

I'm by no means an expert but the way I have my PS3 connected is the HDMI is going straight to the TV and the optical is going to the reciever, I don't have the most the sensitive ears so I preffer to max out picture over sound. Plus you can get 2 channel PCM using optical if you are able to hear a noticiable difference.

For those that currently own the Sony Playstation 3 which has HDMI 1.3, Pioneer is coming out with a HDMI 1.3 Elite Receiver that supports both 1080P and all the 7.1 surround sound audio formats using one cable connection. Also this year we will see many more companies release BLU-RAY players and receivers with 1.3 HDMI.
When upgrading home video hardware or software (movies) I find EBAY works out great. If one does not want to relocate the older equipment to a second room in the house they can always sale the old equipment on EBAY and buy new equipment. It gets to costly to upgrade equipment every year. Many people wait a few years or even 5 years and then when major improvements in technology comes along then it’s a ideal time to upgrade. Home theater equipment is kind of like buying a new car and watching it deflate in value every year. |
