Anyone own this and can comment on the picture quality and aspect ratio? It seems to only have a Dolby Digital 2.0 English audio track, as well as Italian 5.1 DTS-HD MA and DD2.0 tracks.

It's being discussed in this thread, but I don't speak Italian so I don't know what to make of it.

I know of a few people that have it coming to them, so when they report on it I'll post what they thought.
should be this week sometime.
btw: you can use copy/paste at google translate to find out what they are saying in that thread.
just highlight a post and copy it into the google translate box.
of course change settings in the box to From Italian To English.
http://translate.google.com/#

one post says--
there are sequences that show very clearly a good hd ..... when he enters the supermarket detail and definition are excellent .... ditto when running the camp for the "household" around have a good definition .... the walls ... all the sidewalks in this denotes a master bd hd .... if you do not like is another matter but it is certainly little better than a DVD upscaled .... I did the comparison-switched with many sequences in the DVD and the difference is embarrassing (for the DVD ).... frankly I'm glad these outputs eagle (arizona dream ... I got too good for me as I truly am innocent of course, is that jelly the dvd is good to say that already enjoyed a master hd ....) if it were not for the horrible cover ... the price (vabbeh. .. is less ... but the official price is ridiculous) .. . and the absence of extra

so seems fairly encouraging.

That screenshot looks worse than the HD broadcast.

hmmm.......
fortunately I have never seen one hd broadcast of a classic film so I can't ever speak to those rampant arguments.
honestly, I think I'm glad I only have dvds with which to compare bds to.
If I had seen all this other stuff I would probably be more disillusioned about bd catalogs.

Woo, that's more like it! Definitely better than the broadcast. Too bad I can't justify the shipping cost until I find more Italian exclusives I want.

Just watched my copy of the Italian BD now, and I'm very pleased with both the image and the audio (considering the English audio track is only a DD2.0 track). I've compared it with my UK Optimum DVD, and it has a lot more detail than the DVD, so it is definitely not an upscale job. It is still not full 2.35:1 (apart from the opening credits), but it does seem to have a little bit more of the image visible on both sides compared to the 2.10:1 Optimum DVD, making it maybe 2.15:1 or something like that. Too bad it doesn't have the Carpenter/Piper audio commentary, though.

Weird, the OAR broadcast was 2.35 the whole film.

I was pleasantly surprised with just how good the DD 2.0 English audio track is on this as well.

Thanks for that info. Was thinking of ordering but that's definitely put me off, I'll hold out for a full widescreen release.

I just ran across this thread. This is really cool news. I might have to consider importing this. I have been waiting for a new release to come out since the UK (upscaled) one is now OOP.

Odd. First 3.5 mins is correct aspect ratio but inset (black bars also appear on the left & right). Then is cropped at the sides (especially on the left hand side?) until 58th minute where it suddenly opens up a lot more, but even then, is still VERY slightly cropped. But PQ does look very good!

Edit: Has Studio Canal logo at the start, and here's a link to a worthy review:

I'm considering ordering this, but the 14 euro shipping has me a bit weary. Can anyone recommend any other Blu-rays exclusive to Italy that I might want to add to save a few bucks on shipping? I already know about You Only Live Once and the Rossellinis.

Check out my recent group buy. There might be some titles in there that you're interested in.

I recently bought this from Amazon.it. Eagle Pictures has changed the artwork. It now has one of Them lurking behind the movie title - in this case Essi Vivono . Content is still identical to earlier release. Same DNR free transfer with its aspect ratio oddities. Actually, the original sleeve seems to have the new cover as a small back sleeve image.
