United Kingdom Cross Of Iron

A very welcome appearance for this classic Sam Peckinpah film http://www.play.com/DVD/Blu-ray/4-/1...n/Product.html

Best film about war is of course Paths of Glory and the rest are either dated, have nothing to do with man's liking for war or just poor copies of Kubrick's masterpiece. Of course Kubrick returned with a very good war film -Full Metal Jacket- but it's not a great war film. There's lot of good war films but not many great ones.

Worst war film -for those taking notes- is of course Jerry Bruckheimer Pearl Harbor: The Movie.

Never been a fan of Cross of Iron really but if they come up with some very interesting special features I'll pay.

There was supposed to have been a Germany release (Das Eiserne Kreuz 1) but not sure what happened with it.

Never seen it but I think I'll blindbuy it. I personally think Elem Klimov's Come and See is the best war film, might change my opinion though.

Its definately worth the purchase - a brilliant film in my opinion. Just a shame the budget ran out and Peckinpah couldn't produce the film he originally wanted - I believe the story is continued in a rather poor sequel?

I'm excited for this one. It's one of my favourite war and Peckinpah films and it's always interesting as it portrays it from the German side. I only have the Korean NTSC dvd and while the transfer isn't too bad, it definitely falls very flat in places, especially when trying to handle the mistier scenes so I'm hoping for a nice stable improvement on that alone. It's a very dark film as well so if it's done right it should be a great upgrade.

Partly a Studio Canal property so I'd be guessing bare-bone specialist and the generally lazy, Optimum Home Entertainment.

Come and See is a damn fine movie.

Sounds great! Tell me, if there are deleted scenes in the featurette CUTTING ROOM FLOOR, do they come complete with audio?

There's only a short deleted scene in the German trailer, I think
besides that nothing survived. I showed some of the actors stills of deleted scenes during the interviews and a short featurette with some comments they made.
I tried to use everything I could offer for this release which is as important to me as STRAW DOGS. Of course DOGS is the better film (they're both great anyway), but CROSS is Sam's German as DOGS is Sam's English film .. So it's in our European hands to make worthwhile releases of his two 'European' films!
I already produced the German 2-Disc for STRAW DOGS which came out quite well. And I guess CROSS will be even better...

deleted scene:

For PASSION & POETRY - THE BALLAD OF SAM PECKINPAH (see eBay.co.uk) I filmed 30 hours of footage and for CROSS I could also fall back on 500 stills I collected over the years together with my Wakefield - buddy Jeff Slater:

I know it's a stretch, but were any of the supplements produced in HD? The trailers maybe?

No, I'm sorry

PASSION & POETRY was produced between 2002 and 2005.
Back then I had no HD equipment.
Everything was shot 4:3 letterbox (Sony VX2000) and I forward
my docs 1:1 to the authoring stidios, the best I can offer..

I never cared much for HD etc. when it came to my film. There's so much
old archive footage in it, quality-wise it wouldn't make much difference
anyway.

I tried for I guess 5 years to talk the German rightholder
into doing a big special edition (DVD) of this title. So I'm
really happy it worked out. In a way it was like STRAW DOGS in the UK:
'STEINER' was available only cut in Germany! (thanks to a bad censored
master from the early 80's).

On youtube I posted (years ago, mediocre upload quality) a trailer and a 2-part featurette on the WILD BUNCH hacienda:

Mike, in view of your comment, I'm wondering whether there's any prospect of Straw Dogs being released on Blu-ray in Germany. As you may know, Fremantle were hoping to release it in the UK two or three years ago, but they appear to have given up on the project.

Any thoughts?

I seriousely doubt it.
The problem would be the new master I suppose.
Where to get it and investing money.

Very sad - in Germany the 2-disc DVD sold very very well,
and in the UK that first Fremantle DVD (I supplied some stuff for it)
even made the Top 5 or so in ranking! I remember seeing it
promoted and displayed in London big time next to Harry Potter

So the title isn't the problem - it will sell well that's for sure.
Most of the times it's the labels.
In Germany we have a forum called 'cinefacts.de' and that forum
was the major instrument in bringing DOGS (until then cut & bare bones)
under way. The thread there became so big (40.000+ hits) they decided
to do the project with me.
The same now with CROSS! I started the thread in December when I heard
rumors about an upcoming BD. I regarded it at my last chance to realise
'my' CROSS project (in terms of all my available bonus material). It worked.
The thread had 4000 hits in 10 days and suddenly I received an answer!

One really must force them into these worthwhile (and important) projects!
