Default Why no Spiderman 1 & 2 as Individual Titles?

I tried to find the answer in existing threads, and to no avail, and since MKelley still can't start a new thread (still in the probation period and can only start in New Members discussion area), I'm asking the question on his behalf. Here's the exerpt from his original PM to me:

Now I'd love someone to start a thread in BR releases about how I have to buy all 3 Spiderman movies -- is there no way to just buy S1 and S2? Because they already bundled S3 with my PS3 -- just doesn't make sense to me to have another copy of it.
If anyone can provide an intelligent answer, I know he's going to be watching, as I'm sure many other members will be as well...

I can't say for sure, but I believe Sony is waiting to finish up all the extras, like they did with Spider-Man 3. 1&2 where very basic compared to 3. They even stated that they didn't have time to add all the extras to 1 & 2.
This is just my guess, maybe someone can help.

Sadly, that sounds like a logical reason. And while extras don't mean a whole lot to quite a few on this forum, I'm a fan of them, which means I'll more-than-likely be buying the individual titles with all the extras when they're eventually (hopefully) released...

I read a couple of Reviews for the Blu-Ray Box Set and they said 1 & 2 were a lillte Lacking. If this is because Sony wants to do them up right then I'm O.K. with the wait. Untill then I have my Blu copy of 3 I got with my new PS3 along with 1,2 & 2.5 on DVD.

This was answered in the insiders thread a long while ago, so it is understandable if it didn't get noticed. Paid stated that 1 and 2 weer alated for later release with a full slew of extras, just like 3 was issued this time around.

This is common practice. Most trilogies, when they were released on DVD, were only available as sets at first, including the original Star Wars and The Godfather trilogies.

It would be pretty embarassing for Spiderman 1 or 2 to beat 3 in sales wouldnt it

I actually wouldn't be surprised. Hopefully by the time 1 and 2 arrive, BD will have won and more people will have players!

(being optimistic)

Thanks guys (and Spike, for starting this thread)!

It really helps, because I was sorely tempted to buy the trilogy anyway. But I can wait until they release 1 and 2 on their own (by far 2 was the best).

It's not as if I don't have a whole lot of other BD stuff to get in the meantime (sigh -- my newest obsession and I'm already up to 35 movies in the span of 10 days).

Sony is not dumb. They realized Spider-man 3 wasn't as well received as the first two movies and wanted to force consumers that wanted 1 and 2 to have to pick up 3. Warner did the same thing with the Matrix trilogy on HD DVD. It's a common strategy of tying in weaker products with more popular products for retail.

I got the set for Christmas. I had asked for it. Despite 3 being disapointing, I still wanted to get it, and I wanted them all on BD, so I skipped getting 3 on DVD and just asked for the BD set.

The lack of extras on 1 and 2 kind of stinks, but I already have them (as well as 2.1) on DVD, so I already have access to the extras anyway. The fact that they aren't in Hi-Def doesn't bother me. Having the extras in Hi-Def would be optimal, but not necessary for me.

When a future re-release of the movies comes out, the biggest incentive for me to buy them would be if the transfers and Hi-Def presentation of the movies, themselves ends up being any better than the current editions. But if the movies are in pretty much the same quality as the existing releases, only now with bonus material, I will likely pass.

The only exception for me would be if they add in any new bonus material not on the DVDs that I would just HAVE to have and couldn't resist.. but odds are that wouldn't happen. I will say that I would be tempted to rebuy the first movie if they would include a really good hi-def transfer of the original pre-9/11 teaser trailer in which Spider-Man webs up that helicopter between the twin towers. But, I'm not holding my breath on that happening.
